Not for sure on this, but didn't somebody use a pitman arm out of a non power steering 83 mighty max as there idler arm? i remember reading a thread called " the strongest idler arm ever " or something like that. it was from a steering box i think also? wasn't his nick Nittberg or similar ?

It was Nitte and yes a steering gear will also do the trick. Les, all those guys bend these things but yeah i bend everything (it's the Az rocks like Ryany said) As for the welded tab i hadn't seen that before i'll have to ask him how well it worked. My plan is for a bolt on new mount like the ones the nissan guys use. Our arms are beefier than theirs but same concept

Wow! Their arms look like crap. Yeah, no kidding. toasty, I don't think you will have enough threads at the end of the shaft to add all that. You'll need something like a couple of big washers between the arm and new bracket to stop it either binding or grinding away at each other because you'll have the arm rotating against a fixed bracket. I have thought about this problem for a while and so I'm interested in what you come up with

I'm going to look for a bearing or machine up a bushing, and i should have room for a 1/4" plate and still have plenty of threads for the nut.

I like the bolt on mount idea. A few more items like that and you will need a web site for taking orders

I'm with Toasty on the "using Auto Zone parts that fail anyway" thing. At least you only have to pay for the part once. If they're dumb enough to lifetime warranty a part like that, I'm dumb enough to buy it.
I like the bracket idea, if you can make it work, Toast.
