I put a 95 rear end in my rig and ever since then it feels like i am " lugging " in every gear.

and my transfer case grinds when i hit a bump hard enough.

Sounds like your install was botched, you might want to go through it again.

That not right dude, are you sure they were 4.636?

yep. how was the install botched? any examples or was that random?

GWS, Its hard for us to figure out what could have went wrong with your swap with no background info. Maybe if you post up the info on both the donor vehicle and the recipient we could help you out.

Year, trim model, build dates etc..

nahhhhh.

I thought that comment was just too random.

89 montero with 95 rear end .

I think the transfer grinds because of the extreme lift.

Justice. when is the next run bro? and where too?

Having owned 8 of these trucks and done more lifts and swaps than i care to remember. I think you might have a problem and i'm not trying to bash or anything, I just think you should give it a look over. Between me and the rest of the guys here in Az i've never seen any problems with those axles or excessive lift. Keep in mind Most of us have a lot of lift and are running 35's out on the rocks.

Send me a PM or make a new thread and we'll figure out your problem before it gets worse

GWS, no runs for me untill the spring....Except for the runs I do here in Afghanistan in my right hand drive Turbo Diesel Toyota HI-Lux....The "moon dust" here is some strange stuff...

Frank, If you have the time you should snag the steering box out of that 95 also..Its a little more heavy duty than the 89 unit. It has a thicker shaft, so you need to retain the 95 pitman arm. Kevin C did this one. Its another one of those parts I have in the garage waiting to go in my 89.

Thanks, Justice - I'll get the steering box and pitman arm, but I'm tempted to pass on the rear axle and wait for a later one that I don't have to mess with the universal joint so much.

I've pulled the calipers and brackets from a 2000 Sport, but I think I'll pull those and the rotors from the SR also and compare the caliper pistons, etc.

Frank

So what is the difference in universal joints that make that axle not suitable? All the V6 propshafts have the same PN joint.

Frank, I think it was Richard that just brought the two driveshafts to a driveline shop and paid the 50 or 80 bucks to have them mate the two and balance it. Isn't that easier than screwing with the u-joints?

There was a running change to the driveshaft yoke in early 95 that changed the size back to the standard v6 size. The earlier 94 and early 95's have a larger yoke on the diff side of the drive shaft that uses a larger (wider) U-joint and a larger pinion flange on the diff. This makes it necessary to use a custom drive shaft to get it to work.. Later 95 and 96 units are a direct swap. since they use the same size u-joints you can make a hybrid driveshaft using the existing gen one shaft and the mating it to the gen 2 Yoke. Frank it might be worth checking to confirm the 95 you have in your yard is the wide or standard joint. Get the width of your 89's u-joint and compare with the one in the yard. Couldnt hurt, but Toasty's data is probably correct.
