I guess I could if the centering hub is the same size.... I think I read that it is..... but I really don't want to pull the pinion to do it.

the flange is not going to be an issue at all. I have had mine through rocks mud fallen logs etc and never even once had a hangup.

Besides, how often do you offroad? that Raider is cleaner than my Subaru.

Now, now..... it's not so much what I do, but what I MIGHT do. I don't do so much anymore, but when I do, it's sometimes serious..... and I'm too old to walk home.

Charlie, looking in the FSM on the Raider differential, it does look like the companion flange can be removed for machining and reinstalled without upsetting the gear pattern. If the SR differential is similar, I guess it can be done if the locating hub ring on both flanges is the same size.

The locating ring is visually the same size. I can measure them in the morning since I just pulled the shafts out of one of my SRs.
It would be no issue to pull the flange for machining since these use shims for preload rather than crush sleeves.

I just took a closer look at the u-joint and pinion flange. It's definitely larger than what's on the Gen1 V6 Raider. The flange also looks like it would be very likely to hang up on a rock or be subject to damage more so than the smaller version.

Are the later SR locking differentials with the smaller pinion flange also 9.5"?

Frank

That SR axle will fit in your truck if it's a late 95 model and yes the pinion flange is larger, but it will fit.

Here's how to tell. Measure the u-joint on the SR and compare that to your truck. They use the same joint.

That flange is not going to hang up on a rock, if so, there would be a lot of Gen II's and modified Gen I's in trouble.

All SR's locking differentials are the same size, as far as I know.

Frank, don't worry about the size of that flange. I've bashed the sh!t out of mine several times and it's no worse for the wear. It's never hung me up either. If you're concernicus about the flange mating, have a yard fly pull the driveshaft and check it against a spare ujoint. Shouldn't take em 5 minutes to have the shaft out and you'll need it out of the way anyway if you're getting the axle.

Fasteddy's advice is occasionally sound...

Does anyone know if the pinion shafts are the same diameter? If so - and if the companion flange thickness is the same on both differentials, the simplest thing to do would be to swap the companion flange from the Gen1 to the SR differential.

The nut on the pinion of the 9.5 is a 22mm thread.
The nut on an 8" & 9" is a 20mm thread.
