So I finally ended up installing the cherry bomb after all. Surprisingly it sounds exactly as loud as the previous napa generic muffler. But since I didn't have a tailpipe before, the bass was indeed louder. I like it now when I don't have to yell conversing in the cab with the tailpipe on.

I welded the in/out pipe of the muffler this time. If I want to avoid breaking the muffler factory weld around the tubes over time, how am I supposed to "properly" hang the muffler up?
