 Vacuum Advance Diaphram Question

Hi, I am running an 87 22r MT. I am trying to time it after a head gasket install. I disconnect the 2 vac lines going to the vac advance and plug them. I then start the engine and set the timing to 0 deg. When I then reattach the vac lines the timing does not change.
I suspected the vac advance diaphram and removed the dashpot and applied a vacuum to the forward most (top) vac nipple and the arm inside the dist. moved. I applied a vacuum to the rear (lower) vac nipple and there was no arm movement and it felt like I was losing a vacuum.
Is this indicative of a failing vac advance or is this reaction typical?

Nope, that's a shot vacuum diaphragm. Other symptoms will be failing to fast idle and sometimes a poor idle as well. Steel yourself, because they aren't cheap. Don't toss or core out your old dist. straightaway. You might need to move some of your parts like o-rings, etc to the new distributor, whether you get it from NAPA or online.
I've gotten a few off fleabay in the past as well; worked fine for what I had going on.

yes that does sound like a bad vacuum can, but only one side. The inside only bumps the timing up about 6* and that is only when it is cold. The outer one bumps 12* whenever it receives ported vacuum. When I had this problem I manually advanced my timing by approximately 5* and left the vacuum hose to the inside nipple plugged. This worked fine with some minor driveability issues arising. Drove this way for a couple of years till I happend to find a vacuume can at pull a parts.

My vacuum advance went bad many years ago. I bought a distributor from a wrecker and transferred the diaphragm to my original dizzy. Worked fine.
Years later, I ended up using that cannibalized distributor when my mechanical advance failed.

You can get a good used one. Entire distributors on car-part.com below. Shipping should only be about $10 to $20 at the most. Give one or two of these yards a call. Good luck! 1987

yes, the distrib is a good bet. I got a rebuilt disty for about $50 and the vacume advance was fine (even if the disty WAS a rebuild and the advance was probably used). I got a "new" disty in addition to the advance and it works great!

yeaht, as noted above, it sounds as though your idle advance diaphragm is torn/rotted.
according to the FSM, the Idle Advance works off of Manifold Vacuum, and is supposed to advance the timing at low to no load conditions by 10-14?. the Normal Advance works off of Ported Vacuum through a port on the carb above the throttle plates.
I ended up replacing the entire distributor. got a new distributor from Advance Auto complete with vacuum advance module for less than the cost of the vacuum advance alone. still working after five years or so. if memory serves, it was around $130, and worth it for the increase in drivability/throttle response, fuel economy, and for smoothing out the engine in general.
