Why like the DOHC? it was only made for 3 years so I would bet the engineers decided it just wasn't worth the problems. Mine seems to be a headache...but I don't really know how big the performance gains actually are over the SOHC.
95 SR + 94 SR Might =1 SR.

I might avoid the DOHC but the other SR options are great. My 95 3.5 has head problems all the time but the power is only ok, a 3.0 would be a little dull but more importantly the locker, adjustable shocks, interlock, and power over-ride (not sure what it should be called, it bumps the shift point up about another 1000 rpms into the red line). My headlight sprayers don't work but it sounds cool and the giant sunroof, well, it has it's purposes. The other little thing I know is the transmission I happen to have is a toyota tranny, "much better than what is on other models", or so some tranny shop told me. I also like the tansfer case (not sure if all are this way), there is a 4H that is slip all around and a 4H that locks the front so you can also lock the rear, 4L is locked. good luck and enjoy.

The DOHC is a great engine and super reliable *but you have to take care of it which is a problem for most people. If you do your maintenance on time you'll never have a problem and if you keep up on it it's inexpensive. Unfortunatly most people who own vehicles don't take care of them so when you buy a DOHC truck it has been neglected for 150K miles and it needs to be cought up and that is costly. I love my DOHC by the way <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

I like the 99's the best because they all have 3.5 Sohc, no body cladding, larger wheel wells and most had the rear locker. I have never seen a '99 without a locker i don't think they had too many if any other trim levels this year. 98's are good too but there was still a full line of monteros that year so you could still get flat fender models, blister fenders W/ out locker, and 24v 3.0's so you just have to look harder to find one with a 3.5 and locker. 00's didn't come with a locker at all. I've seen two 99's at the local pick-n-pull with no locker and cloth seats. I have never seen a 98 without the blister fenders except on the internet in other countries. The 97 was an odd year with all kinds of options. I think they were mostly bought by Englishmen in this country. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/ignore.gif" alt="" /> So I guess it where you come from as to what you see. Oh by the way, most all 98/99/00's have lockers here in California. A requirement for the Soccer Moms. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

Havent decided if I'm gonna link the back tho in accordance.

After having three genI's (two shorties and a limo), I converted to genII's and have never looked back. Compared to the genIII, they're still almost boxy, but handling and comfort is... well... drive one and see. The biggest single improvement IMHO was the multi mode transfer case, but that depends on your road conditions, I guess...

I've got a GEN1 and a GEN2. I still can't decide which one I want to keep longterm. The GEN2 runs better and is more comfortable, but there is just something special about the GEN1...I don't know exactly what it is. EVERYONE who rides with me loves the GEN2 over the GEN1 hands down and thinks I'm crazy for keeping both.
