I just sent Jim P a private message but I thought I would also post here for a broader scope.... (sorry, I just found this site and have been wondering about in here for a couple of hours).

Short story long... the 4x4 dash icon has been blinking for about the past 6 months. The 4x4 was working fine so I assumed it was a short in the system. Last week I took her in for some work on the ERG valve to get through emissions here in Tucson AZ. The guys at the shop said that they had to remove the exhaust manifold and clean it out to get me through emissions. It worked, I passed, no check engine light and NO BLINKING 4X4 LIGHT. I figured I must have gotten lucky. That was Wed. The next morning my wife and I packed up and spent the holiday weekend in the mtns. Sunday morning we awoke to 5 inches of snow and ice and mtn roads.... no problems right, we have the trooper, good tires and 4wd............. NO 4WD.

At any rate a guy at an auto parts store indicated that it could be as simple as a vacuum line kinked or removed. I took a quick look under the hood but don't really know what I am looking for.

Thanks for any direction you can give..

The vacuum switch on the SOTF unit on the axle is the most common culprit...

Thanks, can you give me a general idea of the location (L or R) for the SOTF and path of vacuum line? I want to check for a disconnected or kinked line prior to going into the shop.....

Left side sitting on top of axle?

Thanks again from a displaced Iowan in the desert.....

I don't know the details, never had to deal with it myself, but this might help:

thanks for the link, BigSwede. I think that I should be able to isolate the problem with the information provided. The link looks really thorough.

Hopefully I will have the 4x4 back soon

cheers,
monk
