Need a Spot
Hey all,

I figured this post is a little more diesel/Canadian oriented. This weekend was the coldest that I've driven the Pajero in. Getting down to -18C with winds into the -30C range. I went skiing with 3 other guys on Friday, maybe -12C or so. I can't seem to keep the windows from fogging in this cold weather. Seems when I stop and leave it running for a few minutes, it clears out but when I drive the frost comes right back. I have to keep the defrost on the windows only. If I switch to windows and feet, it starts to creep in and slowly fog up the front. Any suggestions on how to keep the fog at bay and a little heat on the feet? Fogging is slightly better if its just me in the truck too.

The thermostat is running right where is normally does in summer/spring/fall. Its not really an option to be running with the windows down in this cold of weather. Checked coolant levels, they're up to snuff.

Thanks.

First thing to check is the recirculation vent. If it's closed, you will get the fogging just like you describe. Do you have the digital climate control, or the manual sliders?

I have the manual sliders. The digital would be nice for the rear passengers!

I'll check the recirculation vent. Overall, I'm a little disappointed in the little trucks heating abilities, might just be me asking too much from a little diesel...

Mine puts out a ton of heat. You might have a lot of snow in your intakes or on your hood when you drive. That gets sucked in, melts, and fogs up the window. Make sure the hood cowl intakes are clear.

yeah sucking up snow in your cowl vent causes damn near instant fogging, another trick is it turn your A/C while your vent setting is on outside air. as its incredibly dry air, it eats up your fog in no time!

The only time you should use recirculation is in the heat of summer with your Air Conditioning as it gives you the coolest air. Any time other than that keep it on fresh outside air.

My 91 SWB gives out tons of heat once it figure it out. The temp control ( rotating switch) seems to act more like the handle on a slot machine though - you turn it, sometimes get sounds that may or may not be a gate opening, usually the heater control fascia around the knob moves in & out from the dash ( about 1/8 inch)as you move through the control knob travel range from cold to hot. I either get very little heat or too much. Seems like I've got a disconnected cable somewhere. Anybody else run into this?

it isn't hard to pull it apart, one way is to pull the stereo out and have a look up in behind, you can see all the cables and linkages back there.

Yep on the recirc and the snow in the cowling vents. We get the same trouble up here. Had to drive a rig with NO heat up here one winter. Had a sleeping bag in my lap, balakava around my face, and window cracked a 1/2". No frost/fog problems, LOL!

First time I have ever heard of these trucks not being able to put out enough heat. I can ride around when its in the 30s-40s with the corner window open and defrost on low and still be warm. If you have it blowing on you at low fan but full heat setting it feels extremely hot. If you turn the fan on high its like sitting directly in front of a wood burn stove with a blower x2. Which would make me think in the below zero temps having it on full blast should be fine. Unless like stated above something is causing other issues.

Thanks for the responses. I completely forgot about the re-circ setting and just had it on interior circulation. Huge help. I also parked my truck downtown where I work in the underground parking to melt all the snow off it. Helped clean out all the vents which had snow jammed in there. Somehow in our recent giant dump of snow, snow managed to get packed in places I wouldn't believe... How did that happen... hehe. Now the biggest issue seems to be getting this baby to start in the -30C temps. Plug-ins mandatory
