The noise is probably just how a cheap reman unit is going to sound. Nothing you can do about it. You did use ATF, not power steering fluid right?
Your power steering pump is plumbed into the ABS actuator. It supplies hydraulic pressure to operate the actuator. According to the FSM you have to use a "SST" (special service tool) to bleed the actuator. The SST will manually open and close the valves in the actuator in order to get the air out.
What kind of noise is it making? Hissing noise? That's a vacuum leak. Check all of your hoses over real good. Could be the booster itself.

The unit came from NAPA, which I thought was usually pretty good. I did use ATF Dex 3. Learned that lesson. Brakes kinda sounded like the power steering when it dried up, Kinda groaning. It hasn't returned since I refilled the steering. I'm still adding fluid every time I drive, but not so much; and it is foamy when I do, usually. The guy at Napa thinks I can bleed the brakes and proportioning valve myself and call it good. I guess that won't bleed the ABS system?

No, it wont. But you usually dont have to bleed the ABS unless you replaced it.
Sounds like you have air in the system if you have foamy fluid. Jack the front of the truck up, take the power steering cap off, and turn the wheel lock to lock with the motor shut off about 10 or 20 times. Check the fluid, top off, repeat. This should bleed off any air.

I've bled the system, twice, engine off. My fluid continues to disappear. 10 miles of driving and the well is dry. I see only a little fluid on the reservoir on the engine side low spot. I suspect fluid is coming out between the cap and the reservoir. But it would have to be under a LOT of pressure for it to empty the reservoir, right? If not this, then where is the fluid going?

I dont know man. Run it around the block a few times, park it, and let it run. Come back in a while and check for leaks.

Then it's a mystery leak. I've been driving with it all week, and can't find any leak, except the little bit on the reservoir. But I keep having to fill it. The cap on my '86 seems to fit, so I'm going to try that, but it may leak, too, since that pump was losing fluid!

Get a rubber glove and put it over the top of the cap.
Could be you diddnt get all the air out and its bleeding itself as you drive. How much TOTAL fluid have you put in?

Another day, still "leaking", though the cap swap may have slowed it down a bit-maybe, seems like only half the fluid was gone with same number of miles, but I didn't use a proper scientific protocol, don't know exactly how many miles was emptying it, nor exactly how many miles I drove this last time, so, maybe not. I have put in a total of about 3 quarts +/-. Do you know if the unit generates enough pressure to push fluid out the bottom of the cap?
