Sounds like you have an idea what needs to be replaced. Hate to spend the $150 for a new unit if I can do as well with a few seals. Is there a particular seal that tends to leak?

BTW, my '86 Toy 4x4 pwr steer leaks too, but I think it's the seal to the return line pipe on the reservoir.

For the steering box, see below:

For the pump, look in the Factory Service Manual (links at the top of the main forum page).

OK, some more...I cleaned up the pwr steer pump and then ran it. It's leaking from the back plate of the pump, not the edge, it seems, but the recessed part of the back plate. What's there? Looking at it, I don't see where there'd be a seal, unless it's leaking at the top of the backplate, and just running down along the edge into the recess. Where can I get a diagram of this?

The '93 FSM should be useable for you; in the sticky at the top of this section.

Thanks. I loooked at the diagram. The rear housing plate is held in by a snap ring, which explains why the leak looked so screwy. Looks like I just need to replace the o-ring. What'd ya think?

That would be my take on it. Get two O-rings tho', in case you bugger up the first one. I live about 40 miles out of FAI, so I don't like those kind of work stoppages.

Staceman had a REALLY good writeup for this, but his linky is broken.

Here's a good one from Yotatech that should give you an idea of what's entailed.

I broke down and bought a rebuild. It's enough of a PITA to begin with. Got the hoses too. Vacume hoses were all snarfed up as well. I have it all torn down. The housing on the pump has a cast bolt hole that's snapped off. And...looking at the tear down so far, I bought a timing belt kit, as long as I'm in there, and no telling how long it's been; 278,000 miles on this engine, as far as I know. Cheap insurance.

Well, I got in ynder the timing chain cover, and the components are dry as a bone. Not a mark or a crack anywhere on the belt. Someones been in there. I cleaned the little bit of power steering fluid from inside the cover and called it good (good like I just saved $200). Put it all back, cleaned the gunk off of the passenger-side suspension/steering stuff and installed the rebuilt pump. Yeah, skinny fingers help. And many different styles of needle-nosed pliers. I replaced the 2 vacume hoses, and they were worse to get at than the fluid hoses. When it started back up it surged for 5 minutes until it settled down. Computer-something taking new readings??? Runs good now. I had drained the radiator cause it made for alot of extra room to maneuver. The heat wouldn't come on just sitting, idling, but after 5 minutes of driving, it came back on. Long week-end. Thanks for all the good advice.

Yeah, if you had the TPS out of the way, that could've been what it was doing, you've got the air valve there too, so with some coolant spillage, there'd be a little air in there. Wouldn't hurt for you to check your fluid level in a day or two.

Hey! Is it common for the power steering to take a few days of driving to completely bleed? Reservoir went empty yesterday, and was LOUD. I saw no new spills. I just refilled it, and jacked it up and turned steering left/right a dozen times. The level droppped a bit, so I filled it some more. It's quieted down but still has a "background" soft whine.
Also, The brakes were making noises, too--the vacume assist, I think. The harder I pressed the brake when stopped at a light, the louder IT got. Right now, with the steering full the brakes are quiet. Both of my shop manuals (Haynes & Chilton) say the rear ABS is associated with the steering, and that I MUST take it to a dealer who has the magic, super expensive automatic bleeder. Does this have something to do with the brake noise, and do I HAVE to go to a dealer? (The ABS light works, but is not "on").
