Wish it was that easy but, the hole is too big once you pull the ball out of the socket.

Umm, yes, I was not awake enough when I wrote. I forgot the ball was in the arm not the link. Been this way since 77 in Mitsubishi's in the USA and since 73 overseas.

The socket you installed should not need gussets with the change you made.If anything you could strap the end and taper the welds down the sides. The only real critical area is at the spline end.

Reflowing a Mig weld with Tig is a rear PIA since the Mig weld is full of inclusions. The puddle gets real bubbly and never really cleans out. Some guys can do it I guess but I am not real satisfied when I try.

Do you have a gas grille on the deck? They are great for preheat work. A small part like the arm you are working with will fit in a toaster oven.

Cheers, Charlie

OR, you could just do this and save yourself a lot of time and trouble and never have to worry 'bout it. It took the shop about an hour to turn this out. You'd bust the sector shaft or the tie rod end long before you ever did anything to the arm.

I'm afraid that's not in the budget.

Edit: What kind of high steer knuckle do you have, GM?

Body Damage is Cool
what if you just cut the splined part of the mitsu arm out in a square shape
got some 1/2" steel
cut a square hole to fit the splined part and weld it in
cut the 1/2" steel into an arm
weld in a new sleeve for the tierod or cut/ream a hole?

maybe I'm retarded...ohh well...

Toasty, you were right about not getting good penetration, the inserts were pretty easy to cut out. This time I did the oven pre heat/cool down, and turned the heat up on the welder. Looks much better to me.

Much better, that's probably the best you can do with what you've got. It won't likely break but check it after you wheel, It helps if you paint it a light color (white, yellow, orange or red). If a crack develops you'll be able to spot it way earlier than if it was bare steel.
