Will a tranny and t-case from a 91 4runner 22re (I beleive its a W56) swap into a 1987 pickup 22r?

Yes.

Was the 87 a 4 speed? If so, the trans shifters may not line up.

Look on the data plates for both vehicles to find the tranny codes. Presuming both are stick (W56 and G52), they will swap with floor pan sawzall work. Been done before.

Do you have the shifters on both? They will need to move with the trannys, IIRC.

W56's came in both forward and top shifting configurations.

If you have a G-series tranny to begin with, the transfer case won't work without some modification if you attach it to a W56, even if it's the same shifting style. The forks are slightly different lengths.

BTW, something I recently learned is G-series transmissions have 8 bolts around the input shaft cover. W56's have 7.

Not knowing what you're starting with, the best bet is to grab the tranny/transfer pair from the 91 instead of assuming your existing transfer case will work with the 91's transmission.

With a compatible tranny/transfer combo, top and forward shifting setups will both work. If switching styles (at least when going from forward to top) you'll need to cut out the floor to make room for the new shifter locations.

Yeah, I caught that but thought I'd elaborate. I figure he probably either already bought the combo or is now shopping for something else. Sometimes you find transmissions available without matching transfer cases.

Maybe someone should explain the terms "forward shift" and "top shift". My '84 xtra cab 4x4 had what I assume is a G52. One day I saw a '87 R151F "turbo" transmission, with transfer case, for sale (for $400 <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/kewl.gif" alt="" />) and bought it without even thinking about compatibility issues. Fortunately it fit perfectly. In both set-ups the transmission shifter and t-case positions were the same. The t-case was shifted from the adapter housing, not from the top of the t-case. I believe that this is what is meant by "forward shift".

What about the transmission shifter positions across all the various five speeds in 1979 - 1995 Toyota 4x4s. Are they all roughly in the same position? G52, W56, R151? I might pull the R151 for a 4runner that I've got. If I rebuild the '84 I'd like to put a W56 into it. Is there a W56 that would go in without floorboard cutting? If so, from which model and year truck/4runner? -- Matt

The oddball on is the main shift that went on an L43 tranny, which was in the '82. It bolted on from the side.

An R-series is a good selection Matt, tougher that the G or W series.

Basic difference is do you shift the transfer case from on top of the transfer case or forward of it.

While on the subject, is there enough room to work the shift lever if converting from forward to top shift with a bench seat? Or will that only work with buckets? If year/model matters, I have an 86 pickup.
