I noticed on my 89 Raider. That when I am idling a while or going slow that it smokes a bit when I get back on the throttle. From my old jeepin days this is telling me I have some seepage in the valve stem seals. Is this a correct assumption? I have the 3.0 V6 with a 5 speed. This vehicle is fn remarkable. Damn near better than any Jeep I have owned (cept the built up ones) My next question is ,,, just how hard is it to replace those valve stem seals?

I had the same problem w/mine. W/ the correct valve spring compressor it's not to difficult. The problem that I ran into was that 4 of the 6 exhaust valve guides had retreated into the head. I hope your repair turns out better than mine.

Great link...good advise.I didn't use the rope trick I rigged an air fitting into the spark plug hole.It may never happen;but I was afraid the rope would knot up & I'd have to pull the head.I had to pull the engine after all so I guess that was a mute point. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/shiner.gif" alt="" />

I did mine with air as well. I purchased the spark plug hole adapters from Napa for ~$14.
Good luck.

Be careful to clamp the cams down at the backside with the #4 bearing caps so that the timing belt stays properly tensioned and doesn't skip a tooth when you rotate the engine. I missed that step, and consequently ended up replacing my timing belt and water pump. Probably a blessing in disguise, but it's extra work...
