Yes. Cars parked near the ocean even suffer from increased salt corrosion due to the salt content in the moist air; especially overnight and early morning hours.

Aluminum radiators are a frequent source of problem as alt eats away the cooling fins in a hurry.

So what you guys are saying is... Get a beater Ford Tempo for the winter, let it rot away then drive the jeep in the summer....

But I LOVE Ice drifting...

Maybe I can just wrap the whole Jeep in cellophane, I saw a really good deal at Costco the other day.

Will the body just rust away, or will the frame as well?
How do new cars fair with the salt?

Define "newer"....

Within the last 5-10 years, there has been more attention paid to corrosion by the major manufactures.

So, body and frame may benefit from factory attention; however, there are no guarantees when it comes to cars from salt environments.

Overall, I would place CJs in a suspect frame and body category in salt environment.

The Wranglers are questionable and year dependent.

My experience is with radiators. Salt environment is bad for them.

Frequent washings do help; provided the wash solution does not have a high salt content.

how do you combat salt..you dont it wins everytime. you can prolong it, washing it on warmer days above freezing, but usually by the time you get home from the wash it has salt all over it again, just not as much. You can try certain paints like por-15. that could slow it down. or visit the body shop every couple of years. the rust just starts to take over. and once it does your in for a fight. try changing parts with rusted bolts, they strip, break off..thats always fun. i use a lot of neversieze evertime i take something apart seems to work really well. I'm not sure about the carwashes recycling the water out here. i dont think they do, but i could be wrong.

as for me i grew up in central MA just below the NH line. and now i live in Homer which is 30 miles south of syracuse, just inside the fingerlakes region.

So as far as I can tell, the best way to protect a car you like from Ice is to just leave it park all winter??
Just get a beater winter car and drive that around.

Tcoff, you ever been to CA?

But ya if you really want to protect it from the salt get a winter rat. but you might want to make that winter rat a 4wd.
