Update **I have been driving it more and it is now acting up more often and more severely sometimes not re-starting at all until it sits for 10-15 minutes and then it will restart and run fine for awhile. When I bought it the fuel filter was so plugged there was no way to blow through it. I am wondering before I pull the carb to check for gunk in it what the chances are that the fuel pump is worn out from trying to suck on that plugged filter for so long. What is the best way to check the pump? I guess I can drive it till it will not restart and see if I have any fuel at the carb. It acts just like it is running out of fuel when it messes up. When it isn't messing up it runs like our old ram 50 ran when it was new.

hedge your bets on where to go from here and I will jump in and start checking.!

Any knowledge passed down will be greatly appreciated. I used to be an ASE certified mechanic but got out of the business in the 90's so I am up for testing anything.
