I cant fix this thing... I went out one day and my 1991 Montero 3.0L 4X4 started and ran for about 10 seconds then went dead, it did this several times (right before it went dead I would hear a click) then it just stopped starting completely... I replaced ECM relay and it did the start and go dead sequence again so I replaced the distributor and module as well as checked the fuel pressure and as much wiring as I can see and still nothing.. I finally replaced the ECM and it did the start and go dead sequence again only this time the ECM started smoking on the final start.
Ive done the following: ECM, ECM Relay, Distributor, Module, checked fuel pressure, and visually checked all the wires I can see...
Thanks in advance for any help you can provide!

Fuel pump, or fuel filter? How did you check the pressure? Also be sure to read the posting FAQ located Here. Specifically "#3 Title your Post Appropriately. If you have a specific question, put the specifics in your title. A good example would be: Gen 2 3.5 ltr Crank bolt problems,OR My Gen1 is smoking after start up. A poor example would be Help me please my truck Suxor!! OR "Transmission"" Also... " #5 Finally, take a minute to fill in your profile with your location, and add your vehicle make/model/year in your signature, also accessible through the "My Home" link at the top of the page." As I stated above.. Be patient, and we can most likely get your situation figured out. Relax. I'm sure someone will be along shortly to help you out, and we can prob have your rig up and running in short order. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/kewl.gif" alt="" />

Sorry guys... hope this is better and next time I will READ FIRST and TYPE LATER!
As far as the fuel pressure check I have actually taken this thing to a mechanics shop my cousin works in and he performed the fuel pressure check, changed the distributor, module, and ECM after I replaced the ECM relay and didnt have any luck hoping I wouldnt just keep putting money in it... Now he is stumped and told me I better ask the experts which is why Im here!

When I first got mine it ran so rough I thought the pistons were swapping holes. After a complete tune up w/ no change ,I replaced the optical pick-up in the distributor. Not sure if that will help you;was it a new or used distributor that you installed?

Is there any anti theft stuff in the mitsu ecm? That sounds like a GM product when the vats is tripped.
Pull a plug wire off, and have an assistant watch it while you try to start it, to see if you are getting spark, and if thats what's shutting down the motor.

Can't help you with specifics. But, have you pulled the manual from my site named "raider_fsm_1989_powertraindiagnostics-30l?" There were some changes from 1989 3.0 to 1991, but I doubt there'd be much different in terms of where you troubles lie.

Under the throttle body, toward the firewall, body is brown plastic. Known to fail early. There's a site (dsmisc.com) who sells genuine Mitsu units for around $135, and get the new oring, too. Testing procedure in the fsm, basically testing for correct ohms across the terminals. Usually fails due to deteriorated insulation in the internal coils, usually caused by using a cleaner on the throttle body without plugging the hole to the ISC.
It comes out by unpluging the connector and removing two 10mm bolts (with phead screw slots, too, IIRC).
