Why is it they made 4cyl manual 4runners from 1996-2000 (correct?), but none in 2001 and 2002. AND, why was it only available in the 4cyl? What changes have to be made to adapt the R150F (correct?) transmission. I've heard something about the ECU has to be changed. What else?

It wasn't available as only a 2.7 for those years; you found the 2.7 in the plain jane Runners; I have one, which I understand is uncommon for 4wd. From what I've seen up here, other SR5's that I've seen for that generation have had the 3.4 and elocker option.

Not at all sure, but you *might* need an adapter... am trying to think of what BigMike over on marlincrawler had behind his 22R to 2.7 swap...

I have a W59 tranny behind the 2.7, if that's any help for comparison.

There are 3.4L manual trans 3rd gens out there. Not many, but there are.

The 2.7L was not even available in 01/02. Just the 3.4L with an auto trans.

Why? I dunno.

I kind of wonder if the 2.7 in a Runner was performing like the 22RE, where it just didn't have the same 'umph' that those mills had being mounted in the pickups- just that weight difference.

Now, the 3.4 in the Taco makes me glad I have cruise control!

I have a 96 5spd 3.4L 4Runner. I didn't know they were rare. It's got 250K on it, need to replace the clutch soon, replaced it at 140K with a cheapie, have a Marlin Crawler to replace it. Been sitting in my basement for over 2 years now. Just haven't had time to replace it.

Naw, the 2.7 in the Runner is rare, I just think people looked past them to the 3.4 instead. What makes mine rather rare is the fact that it's a plain Jane package, and does NOT have ABS.
