A list member mentioned that he thought it should be possible to raise the boost on my 2.5 by installing a higher pressure relief valve on my turbo? Anyone have any experience with this? I'm looking to round up a few stray horses if possible.

Well, one way to boost boost is by putting washers under your waste gate. But before you start messing about with boost at all, I'd get a boost gauge first, and see where you are boosting now. You may even be under the factory spec (I can't tell you what that is for your truck, because you still haven't confirmed which engine you have yet... ("My first Diesel" post) . In the meant time, I wouldn't go too high on either diesel without opening up the exhaust first, and installing a pyrometer. EGT's will climb as you raise boost... Others have differing opinions on this, and someone will undoubtedly post about running 27psi with no problems...

the washer idea works but I would just buy a manual boost controller so you actually have some adjustment by the turn of a knob. I put my boost controller back in and cranked the fuel back up, I'm up at 20psi. with no issues.
I am in the midst of collecting vacuum switches and making my own dual-stage boost controller so I have have high/low boost by the flick of a switch. I had it on my old turbo colt and it is the bees knees!!
you should be able to turn your boost up to 16psi without having to upgrade exhaust or cranking your fuel up. just don't haul a 4000lb. trailer up a long hill at that boost and you'll be fine.

Can you post what you know about manual boost controllers? That sounds like fun. Can I just walk into a tuner shop or ebay and get a "Greddy" or whatever?

you sure can! it is a super easy install aswell. you just put it inline on the wastegate actuator line. I recommend a turbosmart brand as they are cheap in very popular.

I have read on the pocuk website several times that the factory setting for the 4d56 is 12psi but this can be increased slightly. Sounds like a good idea though, as phil mentioned, to get a boost gauge and pyrometer in place. I am planning on eliminating my lower dash cubby for a gauge cluster, also like phil has done. Ok, I just wanna be like Phil....Go ahead and say it.

Wow, I should check my threads more often. Sorry PHIL, my engine is just your garden variety 2.5 TDI with AT.
Crazy... washers? Just my style :-) Btw, I think I'll put a boost gauge where my broken disco ball is.
Regarding "turbosmart", please pardon my ignorance, but could someone explain to me how this works mechanically? I promise I'll go read up on the subject but I can't resist asking. So I imagine this "wastegate" is a relief valve right? The relief valve has a setting at which it dumps pressure. The idea is to replace this valve with an adjustable one so more boost goes into your motor and not out of the wastegate. So does one remove the old wastegate and replace it? Because I saw someone talking about just "adding inline", which does not seem right just to "add" an additional relief valve.
Anyway ok, I will go read up a bit

Check it out, goobye disco ball. I was looking at the "Turbosmart" products online and well, suffice to say I don't yet know what I'm doing . So, I'm going to do as I'm told, install the gauge and then return to pester you guy's some more. Suppose a big exhaust pipe in the meantime would be in order too. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/RACING-Bo...sQ5fAccessories

I wouldn't buy that boost gauge, since it reads in inHg (inches of Mercury) and not psi, which is more common these days.
Unless you can do this calc on the fly: 1 inHg = 0.491098 psi
