What's the best/easiest way to remove the rear shocks? I slid under to try and remove top nut but it only spun the entire piston.

The shaft on most, if not all shocks has two flats. Hold the shaft using those flats with one hand and unscrew the nut with the other hand. I find it easiest to hold the shaft with visegrip-type pliers.

I was never successful at properly disassembling a shock that went through a couple winters, but that was a rust belt.

If it's rusted on there, don't even bother (unless you're reusing it) bust out a sawzall or hacksaw and saw the top of the shaft off w/the nut on it.

Jim's got the right trick though, and apparently psychic too.

No, I'm not psychic, but I have used the same trick on innumerable vehicles over the last 45 years or so.

Yes, Jim is right.

I usually use another technique: I keep the upper part of the shock really tight with my left hand and I use the wrench on the nut with my right hand. But I live in sunny California and probably my shocks are never really stuck.

I guess it is apparent what kind of shock design he is talking about...FWIW on my Trooper the rear shock has two "ears" at the top, not the straight threaded thing (which, BTW, the fronts do have).
