as the subject states i have just done an engine swap with a motor from a 98 model (including the computer.
I unplugged the wiring from the computer and pulled the wiring through the firewall then pulled the motor out then reinstalled the new motor plugged it all in and it wont start (i made sure the O2 sensor was plugged in as well)
So now it is a game of trial and error to figure this out so if anyone has any suggestions i would be most greatful

need more info....does it crank and just not fire,does it even try to fire,does it smell like fuel,etc...please tell us as many details as possible...also you should have been able to keep your computer and just use all of your original sensors or buy new sensors for a 1997

In AU, what is the difference in the engine between the 97 and 98?

Why did you change the wiring?

Could have broken wires with all the pulling.

Are you getting spark, fuel, injectors firing, is your computer getting power? You need to do some basic investigation and report your findings before we can help you.

Unless someone has done this and had the same issues, then they may have found a quick fix of which they will be happy to post.

Let us know what you have after investigation of the basics other than it won't start.

ok it is turning over but it will not fire i just thought that if the computer worked in the 98 it should work in the 97 just in case the other computer had a fault and i found that it was a lot easier to just disconnect the computer and pull the harness through the firewall than it was to disconnect every sensor on the motor and gearbox just in case i forgot where everything went (and i dont have access to a hoist so i am working at ground level and i am not the smallest of people and the car is stock height (at the moment))
i am unsure if it has fuel and no spark or spark and no fuel or if the fuel in the tank is beyond use (the 97 came from a wreckers so i dont know how long it has been there so i am going to drain the fuel out and replace it (maybe i should have done that first)

Go back and make sure all of your ground wires are in place, when I changed my head years ago I forgot some ground wires. After I found them it fired right up. Other than that just trace every wire and make sure they are hooked up. Check your plugs and make sure all the wires are still in the plug also, unpluging wires can sometime pull a wire out of the plug. Other than make sure you have spark and fuel.

not as yet and i have found this little black box under the stereo and i have no idea what it is for and i have diagnosed the fuel pump is not working so i dont know if there is any spark as well does anyone have any idea how i can check if there is any spark is the "little black box" some sort of anti-theft device

dont wory about the "little black box" i found out it is the controler for the ABS braking

Mine died while wheeling and wouldn't start again. Turned over fine but was like computer was dead. Tried everything until eventually unplugged computer for a minute. Then started right up. Doesn't sound same though if it never worked.

How do you access this computer just in case I need to diag a runability issue?
