Getting the Wheeling Fever
Here's update on my attempt to bore out the Chevy rally wheels that I picked up. Unfortunately, I didn't pay attention to the fact that the rally wheels were hub- centric, rather than lug-centric, so in the end I decided not to attempt to modify them since they wouldn't have any way to center themselves on the hub unless I could get the center incredibly precise.

So now I'm back to looking for another set of wheels. Here's the question: I can pick up a set of 15x12 wheels for super cheap but are they too wide to run 12.5" wide tires? My understanding is that 12" is too wide to hold the bead. I don't do too much airing down but I'd hate to lose a bead on one of my trips to the beach.
Also, I have the choice of putting my 31x12.5s on it or my 33x12.5s. I'll probably go with the 31s since I'll have less sidewall to bend and affect the bead.

Any thoughts on 12" wide wheels running 12.5s?
Thanks

Matt

i had a set of 35x12.5 on 15x12. I wouldn't run it IMO it looked retarded...i never got to air them down my POS Ford blew a tranny reversing out of the tire shop
i think you would pop a bead fairly easy especially airing down for sand

what wheels do you have now? 15x7 minimum for 12.5, to stay safe i'd say 15x10 max

So you are talking about running 12.5" tires on a 12" rim? That's 1/4 th inch overhang on each side.... I really don't think you're gonna blow the bead off unless you are running 5 psi or less.Ask your guy @ the tire shop & see what he thinks. We don't have sand to run in where I'm located so maybe this is a biased opinion.

Right now I have 15x7 wheels. I've been to every shop and junkyard in the area and it looks like my only option for getting 8" or 10" wheels is to buy them new. I was hoping to get some used ones since I plan on running 10.5" wide tires in the future and won't need the wheels after I burn through these current tires. 33x10.5s are in the future but for now, I got a great deal on 12.5s and I'm trying to make it work until I save up some more $$

craigslist is your friend. That's where I found my 15x10's.

Yeah, craigslist is where I've been looking but no luck so far and it's been a few weeks.

Took me almost if not over a year to find mine but I was looking for a specific rim design.

I used craigshelper.com and search a wider area. I was not opposed to driving as far as LA for a decent deal on the rims I wanted.

The search terms I used were '15x10' in the 'auto parts' section.

You can automatically rule out anything from a Jeep. Most chevy's although some had a 6x5.5" lug pattern. Also be careful that the center hole/bore is big enough to fit your hubs. I can tell visually by making sure the distance between the center hole and a lug nut hole is only so thick.

HTH.

15x7 should work great

I would run 12.5s on an 15x7 rim before I would ever run them on a 15x12. You will be running a great risk of popping beads if you air down the tires any fairly decent amount. 8" wide rims are the best setup for 12.5s. 10" wide rims are decent, but then again you start running into bead popping issues when airing down. If you don't wheel the truck and just drive it on the road then you probably wouldn't have any issues.

The first time you rub your tire/rims up against a rut or a rock and the bead pops off, you will have wished you went with a narrower rim for the 12.5s.
