KF6ZPL,

We live in different worlds. Hats off to you for putting up with all the CA BS. I certainly could not do it. Good luck with your battles. If you ultimately loose out there, we have plenty of land here to play in smile Come on down!

I unhooked the battery last night and she's been sitting all day in the sun. Thanks for all the good tips. I think I'll remove all the interior and clean things up. Remove the electronics and clean them out before the corrosion gets started. Living by the gulf, it won't take long for that to happen.

Headed out in a couple minutes to see how she is doing smile

I lived in CA for 12 years and now I'm in Oregon. Some of the issues are similar. We don't have the smog problems like a lot of CA, but we do have an issue with losing fish habitat.

Every place has its good points and its bad points, I had a great time on CA central coast. A high-lite is going to Pismo to ride the dunes. We have sand to play in in Oregon as well. A huge issue has been yahoos running their SUV's through flocks of birds,,, Intentionally!

That and the drunken sand rail driver that killed a few people on the dunes.

Talk about ruining it for the rest of us.

Kevin

There are a lot of idiots in this world.... at times I've been on that list. All the comments are understandable & thought provoking.I can understand all stances from both ends of the spectrum. I guess my 2 cents worth is this; If ya don't own it or have permission, stay at home.... or drop by,have a beer & we'll talk about the idiots.

oh man, it it all dried out yet?

and kevin you were at the Oceano Dunes
A lot of the environmentalist want to close the ocean dunes down because there are fatalities every 3 day weekend( ), and the sand in the air is hurting some of the older locals lungs.
i personally don't think they will because it is such a big part of the local economy.

I am glad to see discussion has been sparked on this topic...

After seeing Telico closed for water issues and Carnegie on the verge of closure for water issues and Rubicon under attack for water issues...

And, Forest Service and state water boards are beginning to push watershed protection in order to ensure water quality...

I helped Friends of the Rubicon/Rubicon Trail Foundation develop their presentation to the Central Valley Water Control Board that countered the environmental groups pressure to close Rubicon. PEER and Trout Unlimited used photos of 4x4s in water lifted from web pages and forums as their supporting documentation to the damages OHV is causing to the water supply.

I am meeting with Forest Service on their Water Quality Management Plan for California Forests. Other Forest nation wide will be undertaking similar planning in the coming months.

And, when water quality boards (functioning under EPA mandates) become involved, it doesn't matter if it is public or private lands.

Private land owners are REQUIRED to contain sediment runoff to their own property.

Check out Texas Motorized Trail Coalition and their work at Barnwell Mountain.

Water and recreation are VERY sensitive topics and yes, I do tend to get a little course WRT water and wheeling.

The point to take away is short and simple:

The environmental community is beginning to lose on endangered species issues and are turning their attention to two other issues that are easy targets: WATER and AIR quality.

Obviously ripping open your diff on a rock in the middle of a pristine Trout stream is bad but from what I've read about the Rubicon it is not the 4x4 trucks that cause bad water in surrounding lakes...it is the fact that too many people crap next to the trails above the lakes. If the trail were closed to off-road vehicles there would still be hikers and horseback riders crapping along the trail. There just happens to be more wheelers on the Rubicon so they have blamed wheelers and their hobby ....wheeling. Does this sound accurate John?? We should just build composting toilets along the trail.

The fecal coliform contamination was a couple of years ago and it is directly related to the number of people. However, the original issue did not differentiate between wildlife and human as the source.

The last bout (and current) with the CVRWQB dealt with hydro-carbon pollution - targeting motor vehicles. However, the issue did not differentiate between 4x4 recreation and run-off from a logging operation just upstream from the sampling point.

FOTR/RTF is pushing the use of porta-potties on the Rubicon as temps and soil conditions are not right for composting toilets.
