You must truly have a calling & an amazing amount of patience to stay current with all the info from the "tree hugging " groups out there. I commend you.If we all chose to think like native Americans ,we may not have this problem. They believed;Leave everything better than you found it.

Thanks. For the record, I am a consultant under contract with California Association of 4 Wheel Drive Clubs to keep up with "tree hugging" groups and represent 4x4 issues during state and federal agency meetings.

I feel sorry for the guy who has to drive the pump truck full of crap across the Con.

That concept was seriously discussed. Economic realities prevailed as it would have been VERY expensive. Almost as expensive as Forest Service helicopter support to clean outhouses on Mount Whitney.

So how exactly is carbon based pollutants getting in the water. Is there really that much petroleum products leaking out of rigs?

That is the big question. Consider that many diffs have a little oil leaking around seals. And, there are various grease spots where excess grease is exposed. So, there are some potential exposure points when volume of vehicles is part of the equation.

However, a well maintained rig is generally low risk.

For a number of years, Cal4Wheel was required to place oil booms across Fordyce Creek and have someone inspect vehicles for oil leaks prior to creek crossings on their Sierra Trek event.

While the oil boom requirement has been dropped from the permit, the inspection is still required.
