You must truly have a calling & an amazing amount of patience to stay current with all the info from the "tree hugging " groups out there. I commend you.If we all chose to think like native Americans ,we may not have this problem. They believed;Leave everything better than you found it.

I feel sorry for the guy who has to drive the pump truck full of crap across the Con. Good idea though.
So how exactly is carbon based pollutants getting in the water. Is there really that much petroleum products leaking out of rigs?

You must truly have a calling & an amazing amount of patience to stay current with all the info from the "tree hugging " groups out there. I commend you.If we all chose to think like native Americans ,we may not have this problem. They believed;Leave everything better than you found it. Thanks. For the record, I am a consultant under contract with California Association of 4 Wheel Drive Clubs to keep up with "tree hugging" groups and represent 4x4 issues during state and federal agency meetings. I feel sorry for the guy who has to drive the pump truck full of crap across the Con. That concept was seriously discussed. Economic realities prevailed as it would have been VERY expensive. Almost as expensive as Forest Service helicopter support to clean outhouses on Mount Whitney. So how exactly is carbon based pollutants getting in the water. Is there really that much petroleum products leaking out of rigs? That is the big question. Consider that many diffs have a little oil leaking around seals. And, there are various grease spots where excess grease is exposed. So, there are some potential exposure points when volume of vehicles is part of the equation. However, a well maintained rig is generally low risk. For a number of years, Cal4Wheel was required to place oil booms across Fordyce Creek and have someone inspect vehicles for oil leaks prior to creek crossings on their Sierra Trek event. While the oil boom requirement has been dropped from the permit, the inspection is still required.

One thing I learned about the experience that would have saved me some trouble. I should have opened the doors while the backhoe was pulling me out. Leaving them closed allowed all the water to slush over to the passenger side as the truck leveled out. I think opening the doors would have minimized the water damage to the electronics.

Ah, I was thinking how did they get wet, given the stuck angle. Damn, that must have been a bunch o' water.
You've no doubt seen the Safari Snorkel video of the Trooper going afloat? It would be nice to be that watertight...

How to drive through water...
Driving through water can be as hazardous as any terrain. The swift current, unknown bottom conditions, and possibility of engine damage can ruin a nice 4x4 outing.
1: Check the depth and bottom conditions before you attempt to drive across a stream. This may mean walking/wading through where you plan to cross the water.
2: Look to see where others have made it, and imagine what happens if your rig floats or gets washed downstream.
3: Cross streams and rivers at an angle upstream to prevent the force of the water from pushing the vehicle down stream. This helps you keep going in a more controlled manner without getting moved downstream.
4: Know where your engine air intake is, and be sure it is not lower than the deepest part of the stream you are crossing.
Many new vehicles have the air intake lower than the front bumper or in the fender. If water gets into the cylinders of a running engine it will hydrolock the engine, stopping it cold, and probably bending a rod.
5: Avoid spinning tires when they are wet, as wet rubber cuts as easy as butter on sharp rocks.

Body Damage is Cool

I just read through and saw where you got on the enviromentalist topic. I run the local enviromental department here in NC. So I guess many of the 4 wheelers would look at me as the bad guy. but I have 3 leagl moto cross tracks that meet local, state, and federal laws. It is not hard to have the offroad fun but still be envromentally friendly. Simple construction neighborhoods do 50 times more enviromental damage than an offroad activity in my area. But one thing people dont not think about not all land or places is good to be oofroad and sometimes it just best to go somewhere else. Telico is one of those places.
Ok back on topic. sorry about your flodding out. My friend hydrolocked is grand cherokee going through a big hole. I told him to probe it out before going 20 sec lately 6000 lb paper weight that I had to pull out
