Getting the Wheeling Fever
Over the weekend I purchased a 95 Gen II Ls. Last week in Socal I think we had 12" of rain and 6" leaked through the sun roof into the vehicle. I vacuumed up as much of the water from the floor boards as possible and I have the truck under cover with the windows open. What should I do from here? Will I have any electrical issues if I let it dry out naturally or should I be more aggressive. When I get a chance I plan to check out the sun roof to see where the water is entering.

Do you know where the water was coming from? That will determine what may have gotten wet (aside from any wiring in the floor).

I recommend drying it all out as much as possible before trying to start it. May take a week or so before it's dry enough (based on your description).

What area was wet? Perhaps easier to answer is what area wasn't wet?

It was the entire front and middle floor boards and it starts and runs fine at this point. I thought about drilling some holes from under the body tub and coming back with some silicone after it dried out. The headliner was all wet and it appears the water might have entered the back of the sun roof.

Yup. That would be my first guess depending on where it was wet and what way it radiated out.

First thing I'd check is if your drains in the the sun roof tray are clogged. If so, that can explain your problem. They come out and the bottom inner sides of the rear quarter panels.

Is it just part of the headliner that's wet or the whole thing?

If it's one area then you have a better chance of finding the source however there's also a phenomenon called capillary action. Think of what happens when you dip a napkin down into water. Water will travel up the napkin.

If the entire thing is wet, then certain areas that I'd check would be your windshield, holes in your roof (the stock roof rack mount points for example), etc..

For the windshield, was it ever replaced? Could they have messed up the install and water is now seeping into the Monty through there?

Same question for your roof rack? Were the bolts attaching it ever removed or loosened?

On my gen I, I had a leak coming in on my windshield. Fixed it when I had to replace it (all that would ever get wet was the carpet and it was fairly minor so I wasn't too concerned).

Good luck with that and let us know where you find the leak.

The roof rack is missing and the front window pillars look like there are rust issues. The head liner looks wet on both sides at the rear of the sun roof. I paid $415.00 for the truck with 200K miles. I haven't yet totally accessed the condition of the truck. It starts and drives and there appears to possibly be a problem with the transfer case because it may not disengaging from four wheel drive. The entire roof line just above chrome roof gutters and along the sides of the front window has bondo and shows evidence of rust. I am thinking is it possible to cut the top off and get a new top from a junk yard truck with out the sun roof and weld it back together? Has anyone cut the top off Gen II before and welded a new one on? I have some vary bad evidence of rust along the roofline.

That sucks. It must be one of the only rusty vehicles in southern CA!

By the way, there are four drains for the sunroof; two at the front of the tray, visible when the sunroof is open and two at the rear of the tray. I used compressed air and my blow gun with the rubber protector tip to clean the front drains from the top with the roof open, and had to spray from the bottom, under the rear bumper/behind the rear tires to get the rear drains. At least that's how I think it works.

There are rubber plugs under the carpet in the floor. I remember this from installing a body lift. Maybe you could pull those. Does your A/C work? I'd make sure to run it while driving (mix w/ heat if necessary to stay comfortable) to help dehumidify the inside, too.

I too recently had a clogged sunroof drain and it was not the first. My Wet seatbelt and carpet on the driver side B pillar was the result of the front drain clogage. Also the drain line was kinked so I lightly pulled it down from behind the inner plastic fender well.

I have a'95 LS that is leaking when it rains into the driver's side floorboard. It has had a windshield replacement and I'm guessing that that is the source of the water. Gonna tackle that job in the Spring when hopefully it isn't raining every single day.

peak under your dash near the steering wheel. Did the water reach the fuse block?

I flooded mine out a couple weeks ago. I had to remove the interior, ECM, ECTACS, carpet, and fuse block. It was all very corroded and shorting out circuits.

Will do this weekend and track down the source of the leak. I read on one post that someone used weed wacker line to fish the sun roof drain line tubes: Genius!
