Got a problem with the fuel pump in my 95 Rodeo. I thought at first it had just stopped working so I replaced it the other day but when I went to crank it up...nothing. I had thought the fuel pump had gone bad because it wasn't making any noise when I turned the key so that's the reason why I started there plus it's never been replaced. But I took some wire and tied that to the battery to check the old pump and it still works. Soooo I'm thinking I have a electrical issue to the fuel pump. I was driving home from work one day so it was running fine then made a stop at the store, went back out started right up then spuddered a little and as soon as I put in gear it quit. Tried starting it again and it tried to run but quit before I could put it into gear. Then it wouldn't start at all which is how it is now.... I have checked the relay and swapped them with others that are the same and they seem to be fine. Any suggestions of where to start looking would be greatly appreciaated.

I tried doing a search and didn't come up with anything or I'm just plan doing it wrong.

When was the last time you replaced the fuel filter... maybe a bad tank of gas?

It's been a while but could that keep the the fuel pump from working all together? The gas I took out when I changed it looked fine plus it was running fine a couple of weeks ago.

You've determined that the old fuel pump is/was working and I would assume that the new one is working also. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/kewl.gif" alt="" />
If you haven't changed your fuel filter in a while,(I change mine once a year/every 10,000 miles) then yes, it could become clogged and restrict the flow of fuel to the engine.
To check that the fuel pump is working (have someone help you)...
1. With the vehicle turned off, remove the gas cap to relieve the pressure in the tank.
2. Remove the hose coming from the tank into the fuel filter (located on passenger side frame about midway). Be ready to possibly get some gas on ya.
3. With a container to catch the gas, have someone turn the vehicle to the "on" position for a second or two while you determine whether the fuel pump is working. [color:"red"]TAKE APPROPRIATE SAFETY PRECAUTIONS.[/color]
After you've determined if the fuel pump is working or not, you might as well change out the filter if it's "been a while".

Yea I hear and I would only assume that a new part out of the box would be working <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/lol.gif" alt="" /> but I only checked the old one because I wasn't hearing that humming sound coming from the tank when you turn the key to start it up <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/kewl.gif" alt="" />. Sorry I did fail to mention that I did pull the hose off the tank side of the fuel filter to see if it was pumping at all and it was not. So of course when I need the meter the most it wouldn't work either which hopefully I'll have one this afternoon to check and see if there's any voltage getting back to the tank. Any other thought? <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif" alt="" />

Check also the connector for the wiring to the pump. If I remember correctly, there is also a ground from the pump wiring to the frame. If my memory is correct, then make sure you have a solid connection at both ends.

I'll have to look around for that...I don't remember seeing anything other than the wiring harness (plug with two leads) going to the top of the tank and the plug for the fill sensor. The two leads going to the top of the tank where attached to the cover I took off of the tank to get the pump out. Is it with the harness disconnect point on the side of the tank? Or some place else? I know you seem to be trying to remember but I just don't remember seeing any other wiring that could have been ground. Figured it had it with the two leads going to the pump...could be wrong though <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/notooth.gif" alt="" /> but I'll take a look when I get home and see what I can find. Well for anyone that would like the information for future use. I found the problem with my truck... <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/kewl.gif" alt="" /> After talking with a buddy of mine I jumpered the relay to have constant power to the fuel pump and wiggled the wire going to the top of the tank which it got power and I could hear the pump start. So after all of this it was the plug where you disconnect the tank to drop it down apparently would short out and only work some of the time <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif" alt="" />. Cut the plug out and put in some covered spade lugs and it works like a charm now...go figure. Hopefully this helps others if they ever come across a problem like this too.
