Getting the Wheeling Fever
I ahve a 1987 dodge raider and the carb is shot and I was wondering if there is an option for a carb besides the weber. In the future I am going to do a sas and I am trying to figure out what engine to use. I am toying with a dodge v-6 or a smal block mopar. I am going to run 35 inch tires when I do the swap. So I am trying to figure out which engine to use. any imput would be great.

Time to learn the search engine. too many answers to your question and long ones at that once you start digging.

No carb options other than webber really but other options are...
2.6 turbo, other mitsu engines, 4.3L V6, V8, etc.

then once you swap engines you need to consider tranny options (except for the mitsu 2.6T) too and then there's all the new wiring, fitting, bracing, radiator fitting, etc.

How much time and money do you want to invest is a better question when it comes to the other swaps.

The question I asked are there any other options besides a webber for a carb. Also I was wondering if you guys would prefer a v-6 vs a v-8 . I did look at all of the threads and thats why I am asking this question about the engine. There are alot of stock engine vehicles on here , so I was wondering what you guys would do.

I answered your question about the carb.

The answer to your question about what to throw under there depends alot on you, not what we prefer. Will you do the work yourself, pay someone to do it, or either/or depending on what you can get out of it? And what are you hoping to get out of it? What kind of trails do you intend to run?

Ok will a v-6 have enough power to turn 35's. I want to be able to drive it on the freeway at speed. The v-8 looks to be a tight fit. I work at a fab shop so all the work Would be done by me and my boss. So the cost would be the misc parts. This is where I work Qualafab.com.

Ok, thanks for the details. If you're comfortable with it, a turbo 2.6 out of a starquest is a common upgrade for the stock 2.6.

Another common upgrade is the 4.3v6 Chevy motor found in late model blazers (the small ones).

Another possible upgrade although probably costlier would be a 3.5sohc or dohc engine from a later model Montero (94 and up)

I'm sure you could even throw a twin turbo v6 out of a 3000gt in there or supercharge a v6 like what frank is doing.

There may be other setups Ive forgotten.

Each has their pro's and cons. Many of those that have done them will tell you how their setup is better/easier than the others setup.

I still say it's up to you to figure out which one is really right for you. If it were me, I'd pick the most reliable and simplest one to setup and maintain that has the right HP (the stock 3.0L has enough power to turn 35's w/ the stock gearing albeit it may feel a little underpowered at highway speeds) not necessarily the one with the most HP.

Carb options are Webber or EFI conversion like Offroader said. If you want to swap an engine go diesel for more power and better MPG than oh say SB v8 or even large v6.

Just find an '88-'89 Starion/Conquest donor with the 2.6l turbo motor, read the Turbo Conversion Bible thread and be done with it. Why do you think there's so much info "stickied" at the top of this forum on it? You can get whatever HP you want out of it.

Why is this coming up so much lately? You guys looking to pull fifth-wheel trailers any time soon? I'm sure the 4.3 conversion has its' advantages, and if you can find one for cheap, I guess I can see the appeal. Not really.

I have never dealt much with all the newer turbo and fuel injection stuff. Thats why I want to go with a v-6 or a v-8.
From the stand point of bigger is always better is another reason.

The early mitsu EFI is in most cases more simple than the mikuni carb setups.

I still recommend 2.3 TDI
