While it's not a Sportage electrical question, I wasn't sure where to post it, and besides you guys know your s*** here.

I have a miller mig welder. 230V 20 amps single phase. My garage has a full panel with plenty of slots and amps to spare.

I plan on putting a receptcle a few feet away from the panel for the welder, plan on using 10 gauge wire, a 50 amp recepticle and a 30 amp breaker (while the welder is rated at 20 amps it has a 50 amp 3 prong plug) does this sound good so far?

At the panel I'll need to use two breakers, one for the black one for the red wires, do I use two 30 amp breakers or two 15 amp breakers (30 amps total)? With the white wire to the neutral and the bare ground wire to the ground strap!

Does this sound correct, or do I have it ass backwards?

Play it safe and pay for a sparkie to do it properly.

Should use a 30 amp breaker for 220v/230v. I wouldn't advise using 2 single breakers because if one blows the other one stays on, it may damage your welder. As far as your wiring, 10 gauge is ok for 30 amps, but if your putting in a 50 amp plug, you might want to go 8 however it may not fit in your 30 amp circuit breaker.
It sounds like you have done your homework, however, on most 220 single phase applicatons, you don't use the common, just the ground, but not knowing your machines needs, it may be wired differently. Buddy up to an electrician <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/patriot.gif" alt="" /> and maybe for a sixpack he'll walk you through it.

Breaker must be double-ganged for 230V operation. Not two singles as you suggested. A 30 AMP should be sufficient for your application.

The breaker must also be compatible with your brand of breaker box (Murray, GE, etc) to insure fit and to insure you engage L1 and L2 in the box to obtain 230V.

Don't have my NEC book handy so can't comment on wire sizes.

As been suggested a sparkie (electrician)is your best friend here.

Well go figure my girlfriend is right, I should have read the instruction manual that came with the welder FIRST!

30amp duplex breaker, 10 gague 2 wire cable, bare coper wire to ground, NOT the neautral bar, and the whit and black wire (Label the white wire as hot) to the live terminals.

Lesson learned, read the instruction manual first, next thing you know i'll be buying road maps! hehehe!
