'95 montero 3.5L crankshaft bolt backed out causing thread damage 4 months ago. Managed to clean threads and after applying half a tube of blue threadlock actually got got bolt torqued to specs. Alas - bolt has backed out again, sheared pin and damaged threads further. My question is, can I drill and tap the crankshaft or any other fixes to get me through another year. The Montero itself has been great in all aspects and I hate to think this One Damm bolt is causing all these headches. Thanks

I just went through this except mine backed out, sheared the pin and seazed to the crankshaft. After breaking the head off the bolt I broke a Snap On easy out in the bolt and had to grind it out. I found a 14mm x 1.5 heli coil kit that you can replace your threads with. You might have to buy a right angle drill and a short 9/16 drill bit. Buy the new upgraded Mitsubishi bolt (it doesn't have the shoulder part and is much shorter).

Thanks Monster Max, I figured thats what I would have to do. Where did you find 14mm X 1.5 heli coil I havent been able to find one at any auto parts.

You haven't found any at any auto parts stores because none of the auto parts stores carry it. I had the bolt back out the other day and have some thread damage too (see my HELP! thread). I have the red thread lock in, but I am thinking I will go Helicoil because I am feeling insecure about it. Here in Phoenix, the one place I know of that has an M14x1.5 kit is Mark's Nuts and Bolts. Check with whatever local bolt specialty shops you may have near by but be aware that it seems this kit is around $95 for some reason. You might find better prices online if you can wait for shipping.
Also, the bolt specialty shops I talked too liked to tell me all about how dangerous it might be to get the install wrong. I understand they want to protect their liability if you do get it wrong but don't be scared off too easily. Yes you will want to be extremely precise, but since your only other choice is a new crank shaft, it seems worth it to me to try anyway. I think I will take the time to try it myself in a few weeks, at least I hope my bolt will hold until then. I planned on doing the timing belt and water pump in a few months. I think after the last few days and the fact that I don't feel great about my current new bolt/threadlock solution, I am going to move my time table up to as soon as possible. The auto parts stores don't carry them they will probably have a 14x1.25 as thats a spark plug thread. I went to an engine rebuilding shop and they had one. It wasn't a Heli Coil brand and I can't remember the brand but it was $60 bucks. You might need to order it off the internet, you will probably need to order a 9/16" with a 3/8" shank also. I bought a right angle drill at Harbor Freight for $40 bucks. I was able to find the bit at Tractor Supply Co. Be careful tapping the crank use lots of cutting oil and go slow, turn in a little then back out.
