Hi

My name is Ricardo, i recently acquired a 1987 Dodge Raider, 4 cylinders, 2.6 Motor, 5 speed manual transmission. The car is all ok, but i noticed when shifting from 4th speed to 5th the RPM doesn't get lowered. I can tell this from the noise of the motor reving up when i shifth to 5th, its like if 5th gear is just another 4th. Last day i drove another Raider of the same specs of mine, and i noticed the gear shifting, though it was a little change, it was noticeable. I just searched the forum but i got entries on issues on automatic transmissions (overdrives) I'm quite unexperienced on this stuff, and i hope you guys could give me some advice, i like my Raider very much but running at 50 mph with the RPM hitting 3600 its tiring and no-fuel-efficient.

Thank you in advance.

Welcome Ricardo,

Let me get this straight... you have a 5 speed Manual that doesn't change rpm when you shift into 5th? I'm far from an expert on this but I'm not sure that's physically possible unless a prior owner changed the drive gears in the transmission. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif" alt="" />

Body Damage is Cool
hmm... my calculations with: stock tires, 3600rpm, 50mph, equals 3rd gear....You have no 4th or 5th gear??or what?

Intersting thought. How fast does the speedo read in 1st before you really have to shift?

I seems i don't have 5th gear, i'm at 40-45 mph and when i shift to 5th is identical to the 4th gear, so no RPM change,

MontyMcV : I must shift at very low speed, at 13 mph i think, at that point the RPM is hitting 2000 - 2300 .

You may be in Low Range (4wd low) versus 4wd high or 2wd high.

The gearshift is in 2wd, i know 4wd low is even slower to increase power and 4wd high has wider range. I mean, the 4wd is disabled. Maybe i'm wrong with the precise speed i told you, but i know it is very low speed.

As for the first thing you told me, the prior owner changing the drive gear, i think it is possible the re arrange it to the original configuration, acquiring an original 5th drive gear? or maybe i'm wrong?
