Thank you guys, never had such good attention in other sites

But well, this just sucks, seems likely i'll need to spend some money in a new tranny, or maybe it can be repaired/modified/something?.

I dont have actual numbers and cannot get them (trans is sitting on a bench at work pending a rebuild) But my 4th and 5th gear RPM's are VERY close. Hardly noticable at all, ever. My truck has 235ish thousand miles on it, but even 10 years ago with ~150k it was the same way when it was my brothers. If you have larger than stock tires, that puts extra strain on the clutch and may be causing it to slip in 5th gear just enough to negate the OD funtion of 5th gear. Just a thought.

Can anyone with a 2.6 manual duplicate the 2500 rpm speed test and report back your results?

i'm getting about about 55 on the speedometer with 31" tires, I get about 45-50mph at 2100rpm
about 3200rpm at 70-75mph
at 35mph i do about 1500-1750rpm
clutch in at about 25mph or so
all in 5th gear

To make it easy....

Here are the gear ratios:

1st = 3.967
2nd = 2.136
3rd = 1.36
4th = 1
5th = 0.856

And...

3200 RPM = to 60 MPH Fourth gear
3200 RPM = 71 MPH in fifth

Assuming 29" tires. Although tire size wont alter the speedeo to tach ratio unless you change the speedo gear in the tranny.

Basically, 35's will get you the same reading.

With all the above information, this question could sound stupid due my unexperience, it is possible to give 5th gear a wider ratio ?

With my noisy, tin-can, no windows turbo SWB, there are definitely times when I reach down to pull it from 4th to 5th, only to find I am already in 5th.

What if a 4 speed got replaced for the 5spd, but with the 5spd shifter? The fork shifts nothing, so it stays in 4th...
