Hello all. I recently got a 1998 Montero with 140K, California model. I got it almost by accident on e-bay. I wasn't really thinking, hardly read the post, placed a low bid sure that I would be out bidded... <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/scared.gif" alt="" />...and, well I am a straight shooter, so I got the Monty.
It needs some TLC, but mechanically it seems to be in good shape. It made the 700 miles trip home with no issues, no vibrations or any warning lights. According to the seller the time belt was replaced at 96K, so I will wait until the spring to replace it. The only thing that doesn't work is the radio, is asking for a code and the dealer says they need the serial number in the back on the radio <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/angry.gif" alt="" /> Anything else I should be aware off? I am handy with tools (I also own a Land Rover Discovery <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/lol.gif" alt="" />)
Oh, and I am in Central IL (Peoria) anybody else around here? I have not seen a Montero in this city.
You can easily access the stereo buy removing the screws on the top of the bezel (look from below). If the dealer will give you the code for free, kudo's to them. Take it and apply it.
IF they want to try and charge you, say no thanks and instead call 1-888-MITSU2005 and request the password and instructions to apply them.
Free of charge, and you'll be set. I believe there are a few folks out there but I suspect the 'Mitsubishi' Montero didn't do so well being in the 'heartland' so to speak and being so close to both GM and Ford's HQ.
HTH.
