Looking for a Montero. Which year? #983666 02/02/10 08:23 PM

Need a Spot
Well, I currently have a 93 jeep Wrangler. 6" lift, 33" tires, etc, etc. I recently took the suburban 4x4 on a snow trail instead of the jeep. After seeing the extra room and ride quality I am thinking of selling it (the jeep) and getting something else. I would like to lift it and put 33" tires to go where my family goes.

Here is my question?

1. Which Montero has the rear locker?
2. What gear ratio do they have? Some year vary. That's fine. What's the norm?
3. How good are the axles? Dana 44 or 10 bolts or?
4. Which year has a transfer case of a 2:1 (for the ratio)?

Thanks,
Ron

You won't need to lift it to put 33's under it. A little trimming and they fit fine. GenII and 2.5 got the rear locker from the factory in the SR model with the 3.5L. The more desirable years are 95-96 IIRC. You can put the locker from those years in the GenI coil sprung. It's a bolt in swap. The 9.5" locking axle is more along the lines of a 60 in terms of strength. Never personally seen one broken. Heard of it in OZ, but never seen it.

Sounds like you know what you're doing, search around and post links and we'll cast our opinions... We're a relatively friendly crowd.

Fasteddy's advice is occasionally sound...

I know enough to get me in trouble. But, admit I am still learning <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

Solid axle on those (front)?

What gear ratio come in those?

The transfer case. What ratio is that?

Thanks,
Ron

They are all IFS. If that's not to your liking...pass.

Doesn't really matter what the gear ratios are. What is comes with is what you're stuck with, for the most part. There's very little that can be done about it, as there's no aftermarket options within reason.

Transfer cases are approx. 2:1.

For the Xcase the gear ratio is 2:1 for all models.

Further Clarification...
Many if not most early LS models (up to 1991) came with a Limited Slip which may be preferable on the road in snow.

As noted above the 94-96SR models have a locker. Their ring and pinion (R&P) ratio is 4.6x:1. In addition I recall hearing that some if not all of the 97 SR's may also have the locker.

Also the 98-2000 models with the Winter Package should have the locker (4.2x:1 R&P gears).

Bear in mind that for the models with lockers have the same sized differential gear housings so you can swap the gears. Additionally the later Montero Sports with the 3.5L engines (01-04?) have even higher 4.9x r&p gears that you can swap into the locker equipped Monteros.

Off Roader
98 Montero with the Winter Package
89 Montero minty clean and reserved for overlanding trips or Cars and Coffee events
96SR (3.15:1 xcase, 35's) gone to the rust gods

Thanks for the detailed reply! I would like fuel injection. So anything previous to 1990's I assume I would rule out.

Sounds like the SR or Winter package if I don't want to swap the locker in. Good to know!

Thanks

Doesn't really matter what the gear ratios are. Sure it does. If I want to put 33" tires and there is no aftermarket available. Then, I need to know what I am getting into out of the gate. What is comes with is what you're stuck with, for the most part. There's very little that can be done about it, as there's no aftermarket options within reason. I wonder why? I have heard many options. People must be using OEM parts or figuring out what works and installing them

Transfer cases are approx. 2:1. Thanks

Actually 89 is the first year for the 3.0 v6 engine.
Also to clarify SR for years 94 to possibly 97 but to 96 for sure. Winter Package for the later 98-2000 'should' have a locker but doublecheck for the switch at the bottom left of the center dash area underneath the radio (all Gen 2 & 2.5 models (92-2000).

Of course anything is possible with the right amount of money, time, tools and energy. I should have worded that differently.

All V-6's are fuel injected.

Curious what your 1996 looks like with 35's?
