Has anyone put the 4.70 gear in their single transfer case pickups?

I have been thinking about 2 transfer cases for awhile.
A couple places I hunt are pretty rough. In first/Low range I have to ride the clutch just to slow the pickup down. Dual "T" cases would be sweet but an over kill, and costly.
If could simply install the 4:70 it should cut my ground speed in half in First/Low range. With my 22REC would I need the 23 spline setup? It does run pretty strong for a 4 banger.
So what do you guys think?

You can run em.... you'll need 2nd more.... Friend had the 4.7's in a single set up, he liked - but to cruise a trail you'll be in the higher gears (3rd & 4th)
- on a side note, which could be that you're EFI, I can practically crawl my rig in 1st & Low and brake on a decent with out clutching.. letting the engine help hold her back and braking (no clutching)... Thats a 22r 33"s and 4.30 gears.....

Can be done, basically you'll have gears 1-5 in low range, then shift to high range and have gears 1-5, with no overlap in gearing. You'll only be able to do about 15-20 in low range.

I think the only way you could run the 23 spline single case is to have a turbo (R151F) transmission. But the trans-tcase shaft will not see any more torque than stock, that is limited by what the engine*trans_ratio can put out. You could put in a HD output shaft like Marlin carries.

Your truck currently requires 21 spline.
I have a single 4.7 case. Difference offroad is bar none. Obstacles at near idle, rather than working the clutch. The only downfall is cruising around in 4-Lo. Max speed in 5th gear, is approx 15 MPH with your engine getting up in the RPM range. On a side bonus, with what you will save in the future on clutch replacements should offset the gears' cost. After 25K miles with 4.7's offroad, my clutch / flywheel / pressure plate surfaces all look like brand new parts. Unlike my old blistered, blued nasty components removed before the 4.7 upgrade.

It doesn't sound like you need something a TON lower than what you've got now. I'd probably recommend 4.0's instead of 4.7's so that your only low range choice isn't quite SO low and is a little more usable all around. If you did a lot of rock crawling, then it might be another story.
Of course duals are the ultimate in all around gear choices , but as you know, its a much more substantial modification.
And not that you have a choice, but 21 spline will be plenty for a 4cyl and single case. You would have to try REALLY hard to break anything in the t-case. The upgrades aren't really needed until you double up the torque in duals or put it behind a lot more motor.

Who makes the 4.0's? I've done a lot of research and don't remember seeing one.

Great call Erik, I think 4.0 would be in his best interest. These guys have 4.0 gears... http://www.northwestoffroad.com/parts/diff_transfer.html

I put the 4.7 set into my 85 4Runner and really enjoyed the difference that it made. I would just go into 4Hi when wanting to do faster easy stuff and drop into 4Lo when wanting to crawl through stuff. I say go 4.7 and don't look back. I am getting a Tcase setup next week for my stock 85. It won't be so stock anymore. I also won't be cooking clutch on the trail as said above!
