So I just got done talking with the publisher of Performance Business about oil and he had some pretty interesting things to say based on a meet-up he had with a veteran of the trade in Cali. The highlights of his conversation were that the best oil you can run is Chevron or Delo (made by Chevron) 15W-40, and you could run it for 7k miles between oil changes. He also recommended ShellÆs Rotella. He said that Mobil 1 was overrated and had ôtoo much plasticö. This veteran runs a shop where he is frequently asked by motor heads to make oil for them. He also makes a lifetime oil filter made with metal mesh that only requires being cleaned with brake cleaner when changing your oil. Anyhow, based off that and 4ePikanini's tech spec post I'm switch from the standard 10W-30 to 15W-40 Chevron or Delo as my default oil of choice.

Delo is really good oil, made for long haul diesels. And I remember reading that the best oil filter is one of the permanent steel cans with a roll of toilet paper for the filter medium.

Can we beat this topic a little more, please?

I've found that, like a stereo system, there's a far greater difference between no sound and sound, than there is between Pioneer and McIntosh.

Discuss. If you dare.

So a coffee can with a roll of toilet paper oughta suffice.

The problem with the paper filters over time is the paper particulates breaking down and getting gouped up in the engine. Whether at a measurable rate or not (during a 5k mile run), paper will breakdown quicker than metal (I know, extremely obvious). With that, a filter with a multi-layer metal mesh seems more logical, although considering a short run it might not make THAT big of a difference.

JohnnyBfromPeoria, I don't suppose I'd call it beating a topic, but rather sharing what I've learned.

Many have shared what they have learned, Grasshopper. And there are many paths to the destination.

Have you ever sent your used oil out for an analysis?

I agree with your words of enlightenment, my son.

Sent out for analysis? No.

If anyone is going to be able to tell you how long you can run your engine on a certain kind of oil, these folks can make the best-educated guess. That is, after you run said oil and send them a sample. They'll send you a bottle first.
