Body Damage is Cool

Was wondering if anyone knows if there is any difference between 4wd and 2wd Auto tranny EXCEPT for the rear part of the case? Can you swap the rear parts and make a 2wd a 4wd or a 4wd a 2wd? Is the output shaft the same length? Gearing? Shift points? Looking to do some modifications.
Any help would be appreciated.
