Body Damage is Cool
Was wondering if anyone knows if there is any difference between 4wd and 2wd Auto tranny EXCEPT for the rear part of the case? Can you swap the rear parts and make a 2wd a 4wd or a 4wd a 2wd? Is the output shaft the same length? Gearing? Shift points?
Looking to do some modifications.

Any help would be appreciated.

As far as I know (and can determine), they are identical.

The FSM does not mention this combination (auto w/2WD) even though it was an available drivetrain. It does mention 5 speed stick w/2WD.

You should be able to easily find a Sportage in California with this drivetrain and crawl underneath and take a look. I know this combination was very popular in Florida when I was there about 8 years ago. I call them "Mall runners" because they ain't much good for anything other than that. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/shiner.gif" alt="" />

the gasket for the rear of trannies to the hoising assy-ext of the 2wd and the adaptor that go to the T/C are the same gasket so that means same mounting, the drive shaft I beleave is 2pc on the 2wd with a u-joint in the middle, the 4wd is not,

So if you have a 2wd tranny and wanted to put it in a 4wd from the bellhousing to the rear of the tranny minus the cone would fit a 4wd but would need a rear cone to the T/C and a different driveshaft, same goes for a 4wd to a 2wd a different driveshaft, remove T/C and different cone, but would need the center support for the 2wd driveshaft, one thing if going to a 2wd from 4wd make sure the center support bracket is welded to the frame on the truck, to know what I mean you would need to look under both a 2wd and a 4wd to look at the center support.

hope this helps, John

The Tail shaft on the 4x2 auto is TOO LONG!

Unless you are very knowledgeable and gutting and replacing then it can be done......

They are both indeed different.

If it is what I think your getting at....Then Don't need one on the 4x4.....Shorter D-shaft and no carrier bearing....

no mikey the center support for the driveshaft there is a donut type bushing that is held in place about midway from the rear of tranny to the rear diff. I don't know it if is there on all the frames or not or just the 2wd, because of the longer driveshaft, thats right that you don't need it if it is a 4wd, but if going to 2wd w/out T/C you need it
