I'm looking for more power for work-like activities like trailer-pulling and snowplowing. I thought maybe the Montero gen-1 V6 may bolt up, yes? I'm not afraid to get dirty, but it is my only vehicle right now. I like this little truck and I'd rather work it than get a small pickup or something. Plus it's been in the family since day-one. So, are there any relatively painless power upgrades? (it's got 127xxx miles. all original, getting 17.75mpg) You could also buy a gen 1 v6. It would be the easiest ;^)

Then the question would be.... I have this 4 cyl Montero, Its not a daily driver since I bought the 4 door V6 to plow with. Its in nice shape and fun to bomb around town in but I want to get a little bit more HP out of it.
What should I do?

I'm bumping this thread again; anybody have any info on a turbo diesel swap? Or does anybody have a turbo diesel Pajero etc. laying around? I know a guy that I can get lots of vegitable oil from - ready for the gas tank. He's got a mercedes switched over to run on it. What kind of power does the diesel put out? Easiest thing to do would be to mod a new vehicle for the plow mount and tow hitch.

There's a guy on the diesel forum getting together a group buy on various salvage units. Bellavesus, IIRC. Then there's pmontero, dudly and another guy that're swapping 4d55/6's into monteros. And finally, there's 4epikanini in South Africa that swapped the 4M41 3.2L DiD into a GenI LWB. Try searching for some of those names and do some reading...
Fasteddy's advice is occasionally sound...

If you want a diesel, you're best bet is to start looking, and saving your $ 3 years ago. They're rare as hens teeth.
I Love mine, but baby it because I know if it blows up, I'm going to be in a world of hurt to replace anything.

If you still want to do a V6, I found it to be a faster and easier to remove the body off of the 4 cylinder and put it on a v6 frame, You get beefier frame rear springs and better front brakes, you can gen 2 alot more stuff and the swap is pretty simple. Don't forget to change the fuel pump before putting on the body. (no access panel in the 2.6 over the V6 fuel pump plate) and a good time to do a body lift. I found a V6 real cheap because the body was so rusty and then took the left over parts to the scrap yards and got most of my money back.
89 V6 manual trans Dodge Raider frame 87 cold weather pkg 2" body lift, Soft 8's wraped in BFG km2 33x10.5x15, JDM Pajero yellow Bosch fogs. Yackama basket. Duel bouncies gen II rear springs, gen II ft brakes, master and booster.

Or you could do what ClayTK here in AZ did...roll your V6, then get a 4 cyl. not running and swap the body over. We did it with 8 people in an afternoon.
