Getting the Wheeling Fever
Does anyone know of a trick to make the e-locker lock and unlock just so I can install it in the axle housing untill I get a wireing harness for it?

Sure. You dont have to do it before you install though. Just unbolt the motor and slide the gear all the way to the left (or is it right, I forget, try both)

You'll have to drive the truck a few feet and it will lock up. If you have it out of the truck, you'll have to turn the spider gears until it locks.

Then just move the gear the other way to unlock it.

I thought you can not get it in the housing with it in the unlocked position.

I think I read it some where on the internet a while ago when I was researching e-lockers. Somebody said that you cannot get it out of the axle housing in the un-locked position cause the locking gear and fork is sticking out to far to pull it straight off the long studs.
Maybe I was misstaken. I'll write a rebuttle when I get it installed.

I simply can't remember what I had to do a few years ago when I replaced my 3rd member. I vaguely remember needing to lock it to simplify the removal. But what I remember the most was I had to remove the e-locker motor before removing the 3rd member because the gas tank skid on my 2000 4Runner was too close to it. With the e-locker motor removed, I might have locked/unlocked the e-locker, but I'm not sure about that anymore. After the 3rd member was back in place, the e-locker motor was the last thing to be put back in place (along with the motor's skid).

Yes, it has to be locked to get it in or out of the axle housing.

Once its in, you can lock or unlock it either using a 12v source directly to the motor (we did this for several trips on my buddies rig using jumper cables and some small alligator clip leads before we built the switch and wire harness setup), or by unbolting the motor and doing it manually.
