Getting the Wheeling Fever
Well lets just say I might be coming to the dark side. The 2.6 gas is just giving me headaches and i want to convert to diesel anyways so im looking for a 4d55t to swap in i dont think i should be to difficult has anyone done this. just wondering how hard it would be as far as what has to be changed to make it work. I assume i would have to make new motor mounts but i was wondering if the 5sp will bolt right up or not and any other problems i may face. also if anyone has a lead on a 4d55t that wont cost me a ton. thanks guys

Well, the 2.6 shares its block with the 4d55, so no worries there for the motor mounts, you reuse the ones from the montero. There is a great thread about ranger-montero swap on this board, that is what convinced me to attempt to do the swap. In a short while, i'll have paperwork (ranger wiring diagrams) sent to Montymycv, he'll put this on his site: mitsubishilinks.com To find an engine has been fairly easy uphere in Canada... Just found a low-miles rust bucket for cheap... You can check LESPAC.com if you're willing to have it shipped to your place...just a thought, don't know about u.s. market for these engines... Here is a nicer one with low miles, cheap for a running, titled truck: http://montreal.kijiji.ca/c-autos-et-veh...QAdIdZ185955054 I can locate an engine around here... the cullprit would be shipping. you can go with a 4d56 too, engines alone goes for around 1500$ can. from a local importer. oh, and your transmission will bolt right up.

Thanks for the great info. I am on the look out for an engine. does Lespac.com have a way to view in english. I can understand some but not all. also were do you live in quebec. I wonder what shipping would cost if I found one in your area. Also do i have to change anything with the fuel system in the montero? thanks again

Yeah... i don't see if there's an english version of the site either...You just type ranger diesel in the search "recherche" function at the top of the page, or, to make sure you get all the results go under VÚhicule you'll see "camion" that means truck. in the parts section also under VÚhicule "piÞces automobile" i've seen some. That's where you want to look for a cheap donor. They don't show up quite often, you have to be lucky or patient... For my location, it's shawinigan.... QuÚbec is a huge province so check the mileage in the top corner of the ad you're looking....150-175 km is ok for me, not much more...I think (if i find back the paper) there's one for sale(dunno if it sold) Rust bucket, 4x4, but the engine was running smooth when i saw it, around 500$. i will check that. For shipping a car or an engine, sorry but your on your own... Don't know the companys, i've tried to have a diff shipped from usa, i ended up doing the trip and saved 250$ by doing this. I think it's less assle for customs and such. IIRC if you go on the ebay site, you'll find a shipper or a list, they'll give you an average. For the fuel system, you'll have to reuse the electric fuel pump from the ranger, that's all i know so far...

you have to check the year range of the rangers 85-86-87 are the years with the mitsu, before it was a perkins/mazda non turbo that won't fit...

Yeah if i were to find one i would probably drive and hopefully drive it back. I am looking around here but am having a very hard time finding anything. Also when you got a diff did you have to do anything special about importing or just bring it across. That would be great if you could see if that one is still for sale thats right in my price range as far as what i want to spend. Thanks again for all the help.

I'll dig in my pile of old papers... where are you located, what is WI? wisconsin? anyway, seems to me it's a long road for an engine, you should look closely craigslist and kijiji north of the border, like sudbury, thunder bay or toronto.... For the diff, i just bring it across, paying the customs and taxes, on a 550$ bill i paid 104$, not bad, the companys i asked around would have charge me an extra 200$ on top of that (brokerage fees) but that's all i saved, gas, food, renting a trailer costs were almost even with calling a truck company... but i like to drive <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

yes WI is for wisconsin. I picked my montero up in Arizona so i like to drive as well. Ill look for closer to me but still across the boader. I found one ranger in the US on Craigslist but it is in Fantastic condition with the original window sticker still in it and he is asking 5000 so that wont work. but ill take my time and find one that will work perfect. again thanks

Didnt found the old paper with its phone number... If i drive nearby his location, i'll take a look if he still have it for sale. It's a 1 hour drive from me, but i'm often on the road... I'll keep you inform.
