i thought it odd but wired it that way. glad to hear it wasn't just a weird translation of the manual.

That covers some of the etiquette concepts...

Other than that, find a local repeater and join in the conversation. Typically, many of the repeaters have traffic that coincides with rush hour traffic.

When you go out as a group and decide to select a ham frequency for use, keep in mind the local band plan and stay away from local repeater frequencies.

In general, 147.480 is a good choice for simplex operation. That freq is set aside in southern Cal for simplex operation.

Simplex, duplex, pl tones and offset are important terms to know and understand. And, how you set them on your radio.

how is it diff from cb?

ok... besides the FCC rules, once you're on the air, it's just 2 parties talking to each other.

i guess just in a nicer way... lol...

and every 10 minutes you transmit your call...

Here's my new (to me) radio. I found it in a San Jose C/L ad, and when I called, it turned out that he lives right around the corner from me! A real nice guy...he's offered to re-program it and assist with whatever questions I have, when the time comes. Apparently he's been doing this for a LONG time...

Thanks for the advice, Russ. Now some pics.
