Getting the Wheeling Fever
Has anyone ever tried to cut back the frame attachments for a front bumper (and reattach) to bring it closer to the front of a Gen 1? Would significantly increase the front entry angle. Front Skid plate would have to refitted as well. Rear bumper seems harder as end caps would have to be cut to fit, I'm wondering if the rear half of the bumper could be cut off and replaced with steel plate covering the resulting hole.

Wadda all think? Rock Doc

1. If you're examining going to this length, you're not going to need your Montero bumper any longer and should just make something up.

2. How about moving the front suspension forward? Or putting a SWB body on a LWB chassis?

I modified the frame rails for aftermarket bumpers. On my gen 1, I only modified the rear frame rails and had a custom bumper built (1/4" & 3/8" steel plate ). The design was much narrower than the OE bumper and was no longer the typical 'step' bumper. Because of the new design I was able to cut quite a bit off the rear frame rails. Grasscat has that bumper currently.

For my gen 2, I both shortened & modified the frame rails in front and back to allow me to mount any Jeep TJ bumper.

I put a front Gen I on the rear of my SWB. I wouldn't expect it to take the same hit as the 95 did when the F150 hit me...

I put a genII rear bumper on a genI after I mashed the orginal. Then that bumper got pretzelled too. I also cut the frame horns off the rear, and used rectangular tubing to make my own, with the OE end caps. Departure angle was marginally better, but the limiting factor is the fuel tank anyway, so no real gains there. As for the front, the front bumper doesn't hang out that much anyway. I'd replace it for better protection, but as far as improving approach, I'm with Russ - I don't see any gains to be made?

Body Damage is Cool
I wish there was an updated bumper thread. maybe 1 for the front and 1 for the rear and what Generation it is. I was going back through the archive and searching see lots of post talking about bumper but many of the pics are gone. just a thought.

hi jack off back on topic. I know looking at mine you could trim it back and tuck it under the frame but those bumpers are flimsy and design to collapse in so bringing it closer to the body will cause more potential damage. it seems to me anyways. I would go with a homemade or aftermarket set up. Thats what I am saving my pennies for

What an interesting solution to a bunch of problems. Good increase in entry angle, beefy and a stronger front skid. The really cool thing is how a winch is fit at an angle behind the bumper. Very impressive!
