also lsd in the air spins opposit direction

Well guys, I just put mine up in the air per request. Transfer case in neutral (manual shift.. no neutral position on automatics), transmission in neutral just to be sure. Spin one wheel by hand and the other spins.... in the SAME direction. Very tightly bound together, as well.. no lag. Spin one, the other spun in the same direction immediately.

Not sure what Jay has if his is spinning opposite directions. Maybe a broken or worn out LSD?

Now the thing I found interesting is this: The neutral position on the manual transfer case is between 4H and 4L (typical). When I spun the rear wheel, the rear drive shaft spun, which I expected, but the front drive shaft spun also. That means the front and rear output of the transfer case are tied together when in neutral, but disconnected from the transmission. This must be why it's recommended to remove the rear drive shaft if you tow it for long distances.

What the heck does it do in park. If there was no drag, potentialy a diff would spin in the same direction in neutral. Generaly the other wheel would go opposite because of drag and it's easier to turn the spiders, but to check for lsd, you will definately feel the clutch's drag when in park to get the other wheel to turn opposite.

I have a manual transmission, so I don't have park. I didn't care to try to spin them in gear, as I would be essentially trying to turn over the engine by turning the rear wheel. The rear diff that I was told was an LSD by the junkyard that I went to try to pick up before I got this one was completely off the car, no driveshaft and no wheels. When I turned one hub by hand on that one, the other side spun opposite, which is why I passed on it.

If you really want me to, I'll try again tomorrow with the car in gear and post the result. Won't be til the afternoon, though.

Well, my local dealer said sure i can buy an lsd from them, for alot, but the vin doesn't really say whether or not it came with lsd. He said maybe a tag somewhere, maybe the door tag with the vehicle wt. and date of manufacture. Maybe someone else will have more luck. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

Kia can tell from the VIN somehow whether the car had a LSD in it or not. I don't know if there is a specific digit in the VIN that tells them this, or if they have to cross check with manufacturing records. When I was checking junkyards for a LSD, if I called Kia customer service with the VIN, they could tell me whether the car originally had LSD or not. (Except for one guy that I got once who apparently couldn't figure it out)

I called my local dealer yesterday as well. Parts guy says just running the VIN # tells him a lot of things but doesn't specifically say ya or na on LSD. But ... when the VIN # is entered and he goes into the part selection for LSD, it should either light up or not light up as a applicable part for that rig.

So what he's saying is, just having a dealer run a VIN # won't help you one bit! The combination of the VIN # and looking into their parts system for a specific part is the only way to determine if LSD was installed from the factory.

So, if any of us are trying to confirm whether a wrecking yard rig has LSD or not, call your local dealer. Ask for the Parts Mgr, have them run the VIN # on that particular rig then look up the rear Diff options to see if LSD lights up on their system.

Of course this is assuming all stealership parts systems are the same so good luck.

Mine did not light up <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/angry.gif" alt="" /> G** D*** M***** F****** Son of a B**** <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/lol.gif" alt="" />
