INSPECTION
1. Jack up one wheel.
2. While the other wheel is on the floor, and using a torque wrench of at least 200 lbÀft (271 NÀm), test the breakaway torque required to start rotation. The torque required to start rotation should be at least 20 lbÀft (27 NÀm). Normally, the initial breakaway torque will be higher than the continuous turning torque. The axle shaft should turn with even pressure without binding throughout the test.
3. If the torque reading is less than specified or if driving tests reveal abnormal chatter, the differential case should be replaced. Refer to ôDifferentialö under ôOn-Vehicle Serviceö in this section.

Ok, sorry dryver. You basically checked it like kia wants. I think you could judge the resistance without actually using a torque wrench. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/kewl.gif" alt="" />

Yeah, I read the article you posted. Says LSD should act like an open diff with it in gear once you overcome the friction plates. Just put in up in the air again and left it in 1st gear. Took significant force to turn by hand, and the other wheel did in fact turn the opposite direction. If you find this EASY to do by hand, you either have an open diff or a worn out or broken LSD.

Have tou tried lifting the rear in neutral and spinning one wheel or the driveshaft by hand to see if both wheels turn the same direction? You still may need the new one if yours is screwed up. Remember to block the front wheels so she doesn't run away on you.
