Body Damage is Cool
Hi, I'm not new to the wire but have never posted on the Mitsubishi forum. A friend of my wife just gave me her Montero Sprort. I believe it's a 95, I have not picked it up yet so I'm not sure. It has the smaller engine, a 3.0 I believe and an auto trans. The engine has been ran low on oil and needs to be rebuilt or replaced but I'm going to tare it down first to see the damage. I just wanted to know a good source for a rebuild kit or rebuild parts. I will pick up a service manual before I get started but any tricks or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for any advice, Dennis

I found the best prices on Ebay when I rebuilt my 3.5 95 montero, scan the parts houses and you will find some good prices, I am currently starting on the 3.0 in my 97 montero sport it also needs some work. good luck and have fun, oh don't foget the pictures of your project again have fun

When I get it home and know more about it I will post what I have. I just finished rebuilding the engine on my Sportage, When it's back on the road I will go get the Montero. I found some good info on the tech thread here. I will take pics when I get started.

Thanks again, Dennis

The two main tricks are thoroughly cleaning out the head bolt holes with a bottoming tap, and a shiny clean block deck surface for good head gasket bonding. And real good attention to a good seal on the lower intake to head.

My guess is the crank will be trashed. There has been some question about turning the factory crank undersized. There is a TSB on it. Some still do it with good results.

If your ran out of oil, I would send it off the the scrap pile and find a better crank to rebuild with.

Mine is rebuilt with a cut crank - not by much though - and it's fine. I haven't been killing it either so who knows.

When rebuilding take note on the crank bolt issue and the headbolts need to be checked that they don't bottom out before pulling - a big reason why many rebuilds fail. ( FrankR has been drilling this for some time now )

so did my workshop, but after I insisted they found the clearance to be very tight.

I'll trust Frank's advice on these engines over any builder. Just have a look at his supercharger build and "bob's 3.0 build" and you will find all the details regarding the building of these engines.

PS : Take a day to go through it all as it's hard to let the thread go once you start.
