I told this to the guys at my local machine shop and they thought i was nuts.

i guess they just never ran into that problem yet!

Maybe they've never rebuilt one.

As long as they're only going to do the machine work, I wouldn't care what they thought of this information, because the builder is the one responsible for making sure clamping range is adequate.

But - if that machine shop is going to assemble the engine, then I'd run - not walk - to a different shop where the machinists/mechanics were willing to listen and do as they're asked...... not as they believe. If they take the time to measure, they might learn something about the 3.0L blocks.

Thanks for all the edvice, I'm kind of excited to get into this thing. I'm sure when I get started I will be asking for more. There is very little more to do on my Sportage so I should be starting in a few weeks.

cool. reward us with some pictures and the wealth of info found here will come flooding in. Frank and FastEddy and various other helped me through the whole thing when I did mine.

Looking forward to your build thread.

It's been a while but I finaly got the Montero to my house yesterday. It's not a 95 like I thought, it's a 94 and it's not a sport. With a little cleaning (very little) the inside would look like new. The outside only has a little clear coat pealing on the left front fender and the rest is in very good condition. I will start trouble shooting it about the middle of the week and take pics as I find things. I'm sure when I get into this I will be asking some questions and I hope to be able to help anyone else out that is tackeling a project like this.

Well, this engine is compleatly siezed. I tried to turn it with a 4' 3/4" drive ratchet and it won't budge. I think from here I will look for a used engine. I just got put on 32 hour work weeks so it will be a while before I have extra money to put in this so I'll keep you posted when I start working on it.

The 94 as an "SR" had the 3.5 DOHC. Hope yours is the SOHC 12 valve "LS". Alot cheaper to fix/replace...

Mine is the LS with a 3.0. We have a local auto recyling yard that has 1/2 price Wendsdays, any engine is $75.00 I believe. I will just have to keep gong back untill I find a good one.

The 6G72 is a common engine.
The heads are the same as latter Chrysler 3.0s.
The block is on SOHC M. Diamante to 94 I think and Hyundai Sonatas to 98.

let me add a H. Sonata is the same long block ,,,has the same pistons and cam timing.
The Mitsu Diamante has higher compression pistons and different cams shafts. It also has a stronger block casting.
For getting some heads to rebuild latter Chrysler , like 91 0n , that had roller rocker arms are the same heads ( except they have stamped cam gears).
Happy hunting <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/cheers.gif" alt="" />

Thanks, thats all great info. I will look for a wrecked doner. My thinking is if it's wrecked it was running when it got wrecked, if it's a nice car and you wonder why it's in the wrecking yard it's probably because it has a bad engine.
