Getting the Wheeling Fever

Be forewarned, 6G72 3.0 liter comes in both 12V and 24V variants. They will not interchange heads blocks etc. 1994 I believe is the year they made the switch. So if you are replacing the whole tamale it might not matter. But those parts don't match up. I would pop a valve cover to find out which 6G72 it was.

95 was the 1st year on the 24 valve on our side of the pond. I think the bolt still works but why try. There are millions of 12 valves out there. The 24 valve has wide black valve covers with the spark plug in the middle of the cover. Getting another Japanese engine might be cheaper. Seems like a rearer ewngine from a monty makes them charge more for it. The holendaze doesn't say they interchange because of the induction. They intewrchange just fine.

Thanks, I will be sure to look for a 12 valve when I go hunting for one. I found one but the Montero was not wrecked and was is to good of shape to be in a wrecking yard, but at least I know what to look for now.

So I finaly got the engine pulled and it's not siezed, it turns about 6 inches and stops with a clunk, go 6 inches the other way and stops with a clunk again. That a bad thing right? I thought so. Now I am stripping the block of everything I think is unique to the Montero so I can go engine hunting. The place that has 1/2 price Wendsdays needs a core but it doesn't need to be rebuildable. I took off the front cover, all the accessorie brackets, intake manifold, fuel rail, exhaust manifold, motor mounts, all the coolant pipeing and oil filter housing. Is there anything else I need to take off in case I get the engine out of a car?

Ya, I was going to pull it anyway to check out the carnage. Another thing I found out is that it has 24 valves, not 12.
Thanks, Dennis

Ok, According to the lady that gave me the Montero it's a 94, the vin# is a 95. I am having troubles finding a SOHC 24 valve 3.0, The block is still in good shape so If I find a 12 valve would there be any problems using the crank, rods and pistons in the block I already have? I will have a machine shop check them out. I will post pics of the carnage as soon as I get them on my computer, the #1 rod twisted sideways and the rod cap is lodged in the opposite piston. somehow it didn't hurt the block.
Thanks, Dennis

I found several 12 valve 3.0 Montero's in the wrecking yard, the best benig a 92, but no 24 valve engines. What is the issue with the heads not interchanging. If I can put my 24 valve heads on the 92 block I would like to go pick that engine up next week and rebuild it. If not I will either keep looking or part this thing out and I hate to do that bacause it's in such good shape.
Thanks again, Dennis

They are different engines for the most part. The heads definitely are and certainly aren't interchangble, as no one here has ever swapped any over. I would assume different ports/passages.
Do some searching on here for past threads and Diamante and 3000GT blocks. You may have options there. There were 3.0 DOHC ones, but also some in the 175HP range (IIRC), which would say to me 3.0 SOHC 24V.
