Wiper realignment - how do I fix it? #989762 03/14/10 12:21 AM

Searched the archives, but couldn't find this particular fix.

When replacing the windshield wiper motor, how do you position the wiper motor crank arm?

I've tried realigning the wiper motor crank arm and the wipers themselves about a dozen times but it always comes out wrong no matter what I do.

Every time I think everything is finally lined up right, the wipers stop in some weird position.

Thanks for your help!

Getting the Wheeling Fever
Take a look at the photos I posted here:
wipers at photobucket

You should be able to get pretty close by looking at the photos.

Worst case scenario, put the wiper motor back in as close as you can get it. Then run the wipers so you know the motor is in the "parked" position. Finally, remove the wiper arms and reposition them so they're in the right place.

That's an amazing set of photos!

Thanks a ton for planning this set of photos, and posting them so people can learn from them.

It might be that the linkages need to be lubricated.

I'll let you know what happens.

Here's the photo you want to look at - this is the position of my wiper motor arm in the "parked" position.

Oops! Well, here's how the linkage connects to the motor.

Hooray! It's working great now!

I pulled out the entire mechanism and lubricated everything.

I had to experiment with the resting positions of the control rods and the crank arm. If a 20-year-old wiper mechanism is asked to move too far from its original limits of travel, it can hang up, even if it is well lubricated.

All these fittings had a lot of resistance in them before lubrication . . .

Pretty ugly, but now that it's lubricated and back in place, it's working fine . . .

TaDa! Working wipers!

Thanks!

Just the man Im looking for. Did you put the assembly back in as 1 piece? Did you have much trouble if you did? My linkages fell off and I'll be diving into it this weekend. Thanks for the pics too.
