The article didn't get into detailed specs it mainly mentioned that the sales of 4Runners peaked in 1997 at 128,000 units and has dropped each year to an expected sales of 82,000 units this year. The Camry and Highlanders are in big demand and alot of the changes in the 2003 are based on trying to tap into that market demographic. In other words, Toyota knows there's a market for an off-road vehicle but the money is in getting housewives to buy them.

IMO, the WSJ was probably trying to see if they could cover it from a finacial perspective (like showing it's a good investment or not), but who are they kidding. The WSJ and other like them probably don't know jack about automotive (as far as the actual vehicles).

If you want to read a good article on the 2003 4Runner, pickup the latest copy of Popular Mechanics (December 2002 issue, yes December. Volume 179, No.12) and it has two excellent writeups on the new 4Runner and they cover it from different aspects. It's worth a read.
