As for tubing, you want DOM because it won't bend as easy and takes impact better. You can use regular hardwire (lincoln L56 commonly) just do a good gob welding and there is a science to where you want your joints. Read up on roll cages you'll learn a lot. If you want to be really badass use 71M for building your cage, it's way stronger than that standard wire and won't splatter all over your tube. Plus it's really smooth when done correctly and that translates into extra strength because you won't have any ripple for cracks to start from.
